How to stop cats destroying furniture- any advice?

We've got 3 cats- 2 of which I don't have this particular problem with, but the third has destroyed all the furniture in our living room by sharpening her claws. We've got some new furniture arriving tomorrow, and I'd really appreciate anyone's advice re. preventing cats doing this. I've tried spraying it with stuff which is supposed to repel cats, but it doesn't work, and I've provided alternative things to scratch such as a large tree thing (which the other 2 cats use), and have also nailed carpet to the lower half of doors- but to no avail, this particular cat will not stop clawing the furniture. I would hate the new furniture to be destroyed practically as soon as it arrives, so any advice would be gratefully appreciated!

  • Try sticking double-sided sticky tape onto the bits that she scratches. After a while you can take the tape off by which time they will hopefully have learnt. Worked a treat with mine.

  • i used to buy cat claw covers from America,
THey are called soft claws and are now available in the UK. you can get some vets to put them on the cat for you as well.
sounds weird but they do work and they look really cute too

just to add that they should only be used on cats that dont go out, as kitty would find itself a bit debilatated in the self defence stakes!
  • to stop cats scratching try spraying citrus fruit on the furniture they hate it.also they hate tin foil. ;)

Many thanks for all your replies.

Thanks Shopperholicnot, but all 3 of my cats go outside, so it wouldn't be suitable, though it looks like an interesting idea.

Thanks for the ideas Siamesecats- how can you spray citrus fruit? Can you buy something that's ready to use?

That stuff is a load of rubbish, they soon learn that the tape won't hurt them, and like mine, rip right through it

Get yourself a spray bottle, the one's people use to spray their plants. Everytime they look like they are about to dig their claws in, a quick blast of that, they soon learn ;)

  • You could clicker train your cat to use the scratching post rather than the furniture. There's also a video on YouTube.

Using foil/selloptape/sticky paws etc are all good to work alongside the clicker training to manage the behaviour whilst you are retraining your cat, but I wouldn't advocate spraying with water. They'll only learn not to claw furniture whilst you are there, and it will probably damage the relationship you have with your cat/s. :)

  • I had the same problem (my last setee was ripped to shreds!). Got a new suite (leather) 2 weeks ago & got some orange oil & wiped a tiny bit on each arm. I've done that every few days. Also rubbed some orange peel on & it doesn't seem to have damaged the leather. So far so good & no plucking! She just seems to sniff it & dander away. Good Luck!
  • I used a spray called Get Off from pets at home, that works. They also do one called Wash And Get Off for when cats pee in the wrong place! Stops them reoffending.

Many thanks for all your helpful posts. Right. I've decided to use a combination of all your ideas! From this website: http://www.woofnwhiskers.co.uk/ I have ordered some 'sticky paws', a large scratching post, some catnip, cat treats, and a 'clicker training' device. I was fascinated by that idea (thanks to the poster above) and the clicker was only £1.99 so I decided to give it a try! And nice to see an American website which speaks out against the barbaric practice of de-clawing cats- I believe it's quite common there.

I've decided to stick some tin foil on the backs of the sofas (where you can't see but the cats can still get in there and scratch)- as it'll be cheaper than covering it with Sticky Paws.

Oh, and I've been to Pets at Home at bought some 'Get Off' spray after the recommendation above.

I will let you all know how I get on, and in the meantime if anyone has any more tips I'd be very grateful to hear them!
