  • What area are you in (roughly)?
...and then the window licker said to me...
  • 1500m2 are you sure ?

    That's 75 average sized rooms @ 5 x 4 metres = 20 sq metres.

Are you Prince Charles' Equerry ?
Just for one moment, thought I'd found my way.
  • Oops - Your right! Its about 1500 sq foot!

Go to an out of town retail park which has a few different carpet stores - many have Allied & Carpetright next door to one another.

Go in with the dimensions, choose what carpets you want and offer them the opportunity to "do you a deal" on the whole house. Take the quote from one shop to the other and just watch the £££s drop off.

I carpeted a new build like this - 1800 sq ft - ended up with cheapie underlay thrown in for the less used rooms (obviously need better quality for the heavier traffic rooms) and gripper rods for free...obviously on top of a discount plus the usual 50% off deals.

You can probably get a better deal via roll-ends, but it depends whether you're willing to settle for whatever's available.
I really must stop loafing and get back to work...

I recently floored a new build house. I got my underlay and gripper strip from the wholesaler (a local guy who supplies all the carpet stores in my area) and bought a mid-range carpet from a local independent shop where they did free fitting for anything above £8 a yard. I checked in advance they would work with underlay and gripper I supplied and they did.

I saved over £800 from first quotes (CarpetRight), and got a better quality carpet with top of the range underlay!

If you don't know who the local wholesaler is, go into your local carpet shops and have a look at invoices lying around on their desks/till points, or check yellow pages.

    Good luck.
If it was easy, everyone would do it!

If it is a new build don't forget your VAT can be knocked of if done before move in or completion(not 100% sure which)
  • Thanks very much for the above advice

...it's completion of the build, although I think legal completion is a good proxy for that. Though I'd suggest HM Customs & Excise might take a dim view on this one - that VAT exemption is supposed to only cover the physical build of the property, and carpets are not legally considered to be part of that. This said, if you can find a friendly carpet dealer who'll buy the argument and take the risk with C&E (it's their risk rather than your's I believe), then go for it...

  • I live up in Newcastle hence I'll need a few extra to 'Place around the top of my garden fence!(Is this illegal)' Thanks for the offer though!

Cartpets are not covered but hardwood floors are, along with fireplaces, and, I think, integrated kitchen appliances.
