there are many spa's there so I would recommend that you go to one, I can't remember the name of it but there is one famous one that is very old and has an outside pool, it was very confussing when I was there but hopefully the language issue won't be an issue (I was there 1988), also do a river trip on the danube

I went to "The House of Terror" museum, that was a good trip out. It teels the story about the Nazi and then Soviet occupation in Hungary.

Its based in the large building that the secret police used to do the torturing in so you get to look at the cells etc down in the cellar.

Hi there are some nice restaurants: tom and George, Soul plus several other restaurants located near a square near the Opera house. Absolutely lovely food and brilliant choice/service.

Learn from the mistakes of others - you won't live long enough to make them all yourself.

Take a trip on the Childrens Railway. Great little journey and a nice break from from the City. The waxworks by the Citadel has some of the worst wax models you will ever see!

We went to the Belcanto restaurant, as recommended by other MSEers, and it was fab. Very expensive, but worth the money. There are singing waiters!

Hi there, me and my oh went to Budapest a couple of years ago and had a fab time! I agree with Misstique, there are some great restaurants in a square by the Opera House, wish I could remember their names! It's worth going on one of the cruises on the Danube, we went on one that stopped at Margaret Island which was really good.

    You'll have a great time!

did anyone else who has been to the terror house feel ill in the cellar. you can really feel it. triffic building, recommend the audio.

we ate at antic which is an all you can eat posh buffet, for 15 quid a head you can drink as much soft drinks and eat as much caviar as you like, grilled meat of all kinds, and truly the best puds ever, especially the fondue.

take a metro to bettany ter, walk out of the station towards the river and hang a left. 10 mins up to the next bridge you will see some shops on the left just back a bit, its on the corner. recommend a walk on margarit afterwards.
  • Hello - spent a long weekend there in June and had a lovely time. Definitely recommend a river trip. Also go to a spa. We went to szechenyi baths in a lovely park - there's a metro very close by ( last but one stop on the yellow line). The instructions are in English - but take a bathing cap if you want to swim in the "proper" pool - I got the whistle blown at me and had to move to the spa area!!! Also take towels and something to put on your feet - the paving stones are devillishly hot!

For excellent views I recommend going by funicular railway to the castle area and also to the top of Gellert Hill. To get to Gellert Hill take the tram to Fehervari Ut - this is a terminus for one of the lines - and then walk to Moricz Zsigmont Korter and take Bus 27 - this climbs the hill and you get off at the sign Citadella. You have to look for the sign and then get the bus to stop. We walked down to the Elizabeth Bridge from the top.

As for eating - we ate at a self service turkish place in Pest near Margret Bridge - Szent Istvan Korut - that's the name of the street and the eating place is about 300m from the tram stop away from the river on the right hand side as you stand with you back to the river. You can sit at tables inside or outside and it's good wholesome cheap food.

I loved Budapest - hope you do too!
