Is this plumbing quote reasonable?

I have no experience at all of how much plumbers cost so thought I would ask here to see if this quote was ok.

One arriving home the other day I had discovered a radiator had burst. I though it would be a simple job of isolating that radiator and putting in in a new one and the heating would work fine... Not the case...

I appears the radiator was an unusual size and due to it bursting it appears that air has found it's way in to the central heating and the heating won't work at all.

A plumber has been out to look at the system and said that he needs to replace two other radiators as the bleed valve thingys are broken on two other radiators. Also because it is a vented gravity fed system he will need to force pressurised water through the system to displace the airlock.

He has quoted me a fee of £250 to install 3 rads and remove airlock from system, is this reasonable?

Thanks :)

No, that didn't include the rads.

How would you get them out then?

    Thanks for the reply

the bleed valve is the central part. (colored in gold).
you can replace the outer plug, and fit a new bleed valve at the same time.
    Get some gorm.

Not all bleed valves are replacable, there are many fitted to the rear of rads and just have a 1/8th thread or smaller.

£250 is a ok price for changing 3 rads and getting the heating working again. Make sure he puts inhibitor in the system.
A thankyou is payment enough .

Thanks for the replies...My bleed valves are different to those pictured so unfortunately I not able to unscrew the bigger part. I have phoned around a bit and found someone to do the same work for £120 :)
I have also sourced cheaper radiators too :)

  • OP - you might find cheap radiators but not all give the same heat output for the same size, so if not the same output or more as the existing rads you might find your room colder ie Delonghi (which we use) are higher output (btu) than Screwfix!

    Yep. Buy cheap, buy twice.

    Thanks for the advice....

The new rads I have bought have a ten year guarentee and I'm not going to be in the house much longer myself anyway so it should be ok. :)
