I've discovered some blackberries in my garden (they may be some other berry as they're quite big!). What can I do with these and eating apples (of which I have many)?!
Thanks

Soooo much! Jams, puddings etc. If you want to do something with them together how about blackberry and apple jam or blackberry and apple pie or crumble? Lucky you having both fruits in your garden.:D0

Ooh, I love blackberry and apple pie.
1) I just use shortcrust pastry and line a deep pie dish
2) chop up the apples and cook for a few minutes to soften
then mix with the blackberries and add a tablespoon or so of sugar and tip into your pastry-lined pie dish
3) roll out another piece of pastry and place on top and trim around the edges
4) Cook for about one hour a medium oven
I think that's about it - I haven't made it for ages, but tinker with the basic idea and see what you get!

id make a tart, just like a pie but in a shallow dish with just a pastry lid, brush water over lid then sprinkle with sugar for a crunchy sweet top, then bake and serve with clotted cream!Member 1145 Sealed Pot Challenge No4

Make sure they're blackberries first
Blackberry & Apples were made for each other and you can mix them together in any quantity so you could make an apple pie with just a few blackberries in if you have tons of one and only a little of the other - if you see what I mean?0 -

Blackberry and apple muffins would be nice, or blackberries with pancakes and syrup (mmmm!) or how about trying some of the apples in a soup, whizzed up with carrot, celery, onion etc? I know I have put apples in soups before and it worked well
In fact I have just found you a scrummy looking recipe for blackberry and apple loaf (sorry for long link by the way, not sure how to do short ones here and not sure about whether I can post the recipe or not!)

You could open freeze the blackberries then bag them up - they'll end up 'free flowing' so you can just take out whatever amount you need, they defrost quickly ( we are just at the end of last year's berries now & it's been lovely having a few on cereal, in a pie, with ice cream etc all year).
Similarly with the apples - I stew surplus with a little sugar then freeze spoonfuls on a tray lined with baking paper, then store the 'dollops' of frozen stewed apple in boxes or bags & use all year in the same ways as the blackberries.0 -
I make Blackberry Gin ...
200gms of Blackberries
150gms Sugar
About 700ml's Gin ... Tescolditz Value Gin is perfectly fine ...
Poke/pour into a suitable bottle ... jiggle around for a few days until the sugar totally dissolves ... then leave for 3 months to mature ...
You will need to either shake once a day or so ... or do what we do ... put the bottle in the cubby holes in the back of the car ... the best way jiggle it without having to remember ...
When mature ... strain through muslin (tea towel will do) ... into a clean bottle ... Far gentler than Sloe gin in my opinion .. or you could use vodka for a cheekier version ..
LB ... :^)
PS ... Pre frozen blackberries can also be used ... as freezing has broken them a little and helps them 'impart' the gin betterLittleBill ... "The riches of a man can be measured by what he can do without"0
