All goes to show, luck of the draw. I had massive problems with Sainsbury - they sent the "now activate your account" about 2 weeks before the "sign this then we'll send you something to activate your account". Of course, after filling in endless pages of memorable data then trying to log in my account was suspended, no response from several emails to CS so I left them to it. Would rather crawl through broken glass than try to open an account with them again.

Like i said before, at least Nationwide provide a decent service. Why on earth can't they match the competition with regard to their rates?? Anyhow, i have until october to decide what to do with my monies - still looking like Leeds BS thus far. :)

You know what - what with all these problems/issues we have with some of these Building Societies, i'm beginning to think that the suffix BS stands for something else :)
BLOODBATH IN THE EVENING THEN? OR PERHAPS THE AFTERNOON? OR THE MORNING? OH, FORGET THIS MALARKEY!

  • looks like i will be avoiding BM then when my bond with nationwide expires in a month. On a similar note any good/bad experiences to speak of Leeds BS. i am interested in their three year postal bond. are they reliable/good service etc. thanks all :)

Just opened a postal bond with Leeds BS and it was totally trouble free. After sending in initial cheque drawn on specified account, application and a utility bill I received confirmation letter and passbook within three days. As the offer is still available I sent a further cheque yesterday along with the passbook and a deposit form which they send with a prepaid 1st class envelope for that purpose. I did 'phone their CS to make sure the passbook had to be sent and the call was answered immediately by a human being in Leeds.
So yes, top marks to them.

Because Nationwide have enough investors - they want borrowers instead. But I agree.... I have never had any other building society/bank give as good a service as Nationwide. Still the best way to get money abroad though using their Flex Account (for cash withdrawals) and Credit card (for purchases).

On the subject of Sainsbury's customer service above... I have never tried emailing them. I have rung them 3 times and they were always answered quickly and by a human - and gave me accurate advice. I would recommend people ring rather than email in case of issues.

but I asked about getting an interest statement for next year's tax return. The bloke said he would send one out straight away. Guess what? After 3 or 4 weeks nothing had been sent so I wrote and asked where it was - and without any reply from them or apology one turned up in the post.

Same sort of experience that I had with BM, I had a 4 year bond with them and up until this last tax year I always received a tax deducted statement from them, this year I waited in vain for one to arrive, in the end I phoned up and requested one the lady on the phone said they would post one that day, 5 weeks later and still no certificate so I phoned again and asked for the figures over the phone, after giving all sorts of info as proof of ID inc what size waist I had (ok I made that one up but it felt like it) I was given the figures, also they refused to tell me unless I told them how much I had invested with them!

TBH since I have been dealing with them everything has been 'negative' I would rather save elsewhere and get a bit less interest, life is too short to have to put up with hassle from BM.

Thanks to everyone for their replies on Birmingham Midshires. Looks like a massive thumbs down. We're lucky really to have a site here where we can exchange views. Leeds doesn't look much better.

    So, where to go?

...indeed. I have until october to decide, and Leeds BS, with their three year postal bond at 6.70 gross still looks the best rate. In exchange for - bad/mediocre customer service:confused:

I'm about to take out a one-year bond with Birmingham Midshires, using their online facililty. Has anyone any good/bad experiences? Just looking for some feedback really.

Im with BM for nearly 3 years there has never been any problem. Hense i do top up my account every year, just by sending them a cheque and a covering letter.

I would advice u to go for this account.

Unfortunately Leeds postal bond at 6.70% is now effectively closed - anyone who has an application in process will have their account set up provided documentation and cheque recvd by this Friday. Existing account holders cannot add any more money.
