Nappies and baby things

Options
Hi, me and my girlfriend have just moved into a rented semi in the expensive area that we grew up in (it wasn't always expensive!), we are expecting a child in May and we both work in a Supermarket so our finances are really tight.
I was wondering if there are any money saving tips for disposable nappies, how could i get vouchers for £££ off? Which nappies are the best to go for? Anything else i should know for keeping the cost down to a minimum of a soon to be newborn baby?

Any tips at all would be really welcome, thanks.

  • you should definately sign up to boots parenting club - they send loads of vouchers, also register with pampers, huggies, cow & gate, hipp, heinz etc.

if your gf can breast feed that saves loads of money as milk is really expensive plus bottles, steriliser etc.

i find pampers nappies the best, huggies tend to leak. have never tried own brand nappies but that could be worth a try? also - i always buy nappies from boots or tesco as the club card points always add up!

    hope this helps

Pampers and huggies club. They send out vouchers.
Boots parenting club. Loads of clubs like that.
    Read the boots threads.

NCT sales for baby clothes, equiptment, toys anything to do with baby. They do excellent sales that do not cost the earth. Very good condition stuff too.

Look through your sales bit in newspapers. I have rarely bought new with mine. I never felt the need to buy new.

Toy library if there is one near you. They can be good too.
Nappies buy and try. I use whatever. I Always buy on special or with boots points.

Good luck with it all and you don't need half the stuff the magazines have in them!!!

tesco own nappies are good so are netto bambino . when i had mine i asked for nappies instead of suits and outfits as gifts at least i would use them.... when you get a bounty pack you will get loads of vouchers, i think its huggies they send quite a lot of vouchers, good luck with the baby
i will be debt free, i will
  • Hi,
We've got quite a few baby things by looking on freecycle.
There maybe one in your area it freecycle.org
You could also sign up with the babycentre website (babycentre.co.uk|), they have some good advice and also money saving bits.
    Good luck with everything.

  • Sainsbury's own nappies are very good - but definitely sign up to all the nappy brands baby clubs as you will be sent a lot of money off vouchers which is a great help. Also try your local Freecycle club because a lot of people give their baby things away free which would be a great help.

If you need to use bottles, you don't necessarily need to buy an expensive steam steriliser. We did (I was planning to breast feed so hadn't done any research into bottles but baby had other ideas.....) but it has recently broken so instead I fill up a large pan full of cold water, pop some Milton sterilising liquid in and then sumberge the bottles, teats etc in the water for 15 mins. To be honest, if I had known I could do that and it would be so easy, I wouldn't have bothered buying a steam steriliser. I bought a huge bottle of Milton from Toys R Us.

All you really need for the first couple of months is somewhere for your baby to sleep, some blankets to keep it warm, some nappies, a few sleepsuits and milk! Anything else is an added extra - unless I have forgotten something crucial!
  • Buy the nappies at the supermarket that you work at so you can get staff discount. Or checkout supermarket comparison websites to find out the best deals rather than go travelling to different stores (which will cost money!)

Also remember to apply for child benefit and tax credits once you baby is born.

This is a do-it-yourself test for paranoia: you know you've got it when you can't think of anything that's your fault.

  • My two girls always had supermarket brand nappies they really are just as good espescially when they are really small as you are constantly changing them anyway.

Definately join all of the baby clubs for vouchers - most have already been mentioned - Pampers, Huggies, Tesco, Boots will all send regular mailings & vouchers. If you sign up in time Boots will also send you a book of vouchers for freebies whilst pregnant.

Also for baby food vouchers there is Hipp, Organix & Cow & Gate that have baby clubs. If you sign up with Cow & Gate & quote ref PB0107C you will get a free cow (cuddly toy!), and Hipp send you free weaning spoons. Obviously home made is more money saving, but I find it handy to have something in reserve!

For clothes, I always look out for the next sizes up in the sales, and you can get bundles of clothes on ebay really cheaply.

For other items keep an eye out on that supermarket noticeboard for some bargains!

Pampers are rubbish and leak all the time. So my g/son is wearing Huggies. Because I sometimes buy them for him (and to get my bonus points at Tesco) I recently bought him some of Tesco own brand. They were VERY cheap and 100% better than Pampers. HTH

I know you asked about disopseable nappies....but have you thought about giving real nappies a try? They have come on a long way since the days of the terry squares. I have been using real nappies for 18 months and have saved myself a small fortune (even with the extra washing), plus they can be used again if (when!) we have another baby.

Modern reuasble nappies are really easy to use, most local councils will also offer financial incentives (for example my local council gave me £25 cashback when I spent £50 on reusables). Also, in the summer my bin won't be full of stinking nappies for 2 weeks - like it would if I used disposeables.

A good site which sells real nappies and gives advice is: https://www.bumdiddybaby.com

    Good Luck with the baby!
