I don't understand why, in this day and age, people are still running around with wads of cash. I can understand travellers cheques, but utilising the Nationwide Debit and Credit cards are the best way to carry travel cash.

does the nationwide debit card charge for withdrawing from australia & new zealand cash machines ?
    whats the "nationwide route" ?

I'm leaving this sunday so any info on what would be the best option in terms of getting currency, best exchange rates etc... would be much appreciated!!

No. And not only in Australia and New Zeland - all around the world.

It's too late to get NW card. However, any debit card in combination with most of ATMs abroad could be the cheapest way to get local currency. What cards do you have?

Do you reckon Nationwide will get us a debit card in the next 3 weeks? I applied yesterday...already have a credit card, but would be nice to be able to access the readies at a cheaper rate.

May bump into you in NZ wjam and travelbug!

View the Current Account rates and charges:
Maestro at point of sale - Flat fee Ј0.75

Exchange Rate Transaction Fee - (ERTF) - Both Cirrus & Maestro transactions are subject to an Exchange Rate Transaction Fee of 2.65%
I don't know whether 'at point of sale' refers to ATMs too, but I think no. If I am right, you lose 2.65% on every transaction.

One of the best places to buy currency in UK is http://www.travelex.co.uk/
    Travelex today - 2.2849 AUD/£
    Interbank rate today - 2.35608 AUD/£ (http://www.oanda.com/convert/classic)

With Travelex you lose (2.35608-2.2849)/2.35608=3.02% - more than 2.65% that you lose when just withdrawing cash abroad with your card.
However, it is worth having some backup for your card when you are abroad - in case it is lost or stolen. This could be some other card or some amount of ££s.
