Dry skin?

Apologies if this has been posted before,
Has anyone got a remedy for dry skin, especially on hands? I resent paying nearly £4 for the only hand cream, a well known Norwegian formula, that will give me relief.

Have you tried Aquaous (sp?) cream from the chemist? Or almond oil at night with cotton gloves (not very practical!)
Also ensure that you use a mild soap in the bathroom and make sure that you wear rubber gloves for washing up and cleaning.Just run, run and keep on running!0 -
Sorry, I don't have an answer but I'm interested in any replies you get as I currently have very dry skin, particularly on hands and elbows, which get itchy too
I've been using Nivea Creme recently but to be honest I'm not all that impressed with it. It doesn't seem to penetrate through the layers and leaves my hands greasy. I used to use Vaseline Intensive Care many years ago and that seemed to work better."An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will"

Aqueous cream sounds like a good idea as it's water-based so won't make my hands greasy. My main problem is that I wash my hands too frequently and even though I try to use mild and moisturising soaps it still strips the natural oils out"An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will"

Instead of using soap for washing, use the aqueous cream for that too. You can get huge tubs of it from the chemist for very little, but depends how bad your hands are - you can get it on prescription.
If you want to give your hands a treat - try a parafin wax bath. I got one of those 'proper' ones for Xmas a couple of years ago, but TBH, they take too long to heat up.You could try buying a block of wax, from chemist I believe, and melting it in micro (carefully) Plunge hands in - should be hot but not so that it's unbearable. Let it dry, keep doing it until you've got quite a few layers on. You'll effectively have big wax gloves on. Stick your hands in plastic bags and leave for 20 - 30 mins then peel off. Hands will be lovely and soft and more receptive to creams. Do it at night then you can slather whatever cream on, go to bed with the gloves if you want. My hands are always softer/younger looking afterwards and deffo less dry. You can keep reusing wax as well - put "peeled off gloves" back in bowl and reheat next time.
C-Q - you could do this with your elbows too. I do my feet sometimes and have been known to do my knees! - curse of having to kneel down with kids all the time:p (That one's more tricky though;) )0 -

Well, you could always peck away at the keyboard with a pencil or even small wooden spoon stuck between your teeth. Now there's a thought - lots of dry-handed MSEers sitting with spoons in their mouths and their arms stuck up madly in the air.......

If you have really rough dry skin on hands or feet- mix lemon juice and sugar to a paste and apply to skin- cover with socks or gloves and leave for as long as you can before rinsing off.
If applying a cream to skin - afterwards, cover wth gloves or socks (and plastic bag over top) - (it looks demented and I scared life out of hubby )but it works and it is cheap and easy.:):)

I have dry arms and legs but since i have been adding a tablespoon of olive oil in the bath, its helped loads. I also use it as a cleanser and last thing at night i have been applying a tiny amount to the palms of my hands.
I swear by olive oil for everything, and the only thing i dont use it for is cooking.:oThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

ROFLMAO!!! ........... well this is the crazy corner of the board aint it <ducks>
Elona, I'm assuming your lemon/sugar mix acts as an exfoliant? That would be great for my feet (although I find a piece of wet 'n' dry sandpaper works just as well) but I'm not sure about using it on my hands at the moment as the lemon juice would sting like hell
Judi, great tip about olive oil, I hadn't thought of using that and I've always got some in the cupboard ... should I go for the garlic infused or the extra virgin though LOL!
What I really need to do is to stop washing my hands so frequently! I don't think it's a problem on the scale of those suffering with OCD, but I do seem to be a bit obsessive about it"An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will"

I can confirm the aqueous cream suggestion, i have used it for years, and little miss divadee uses it for her excema. I also use it instead of soap to wash her in which its great for.
In the winter her hands can get really sore so at night i smother her hands in the cream then put on cotton cloves (they cost about £2 from the chemist) she wakes up the next day with baby soft hands its lovely.0
