I know, but I refuse to walk around wondering if all these things are going to happen with a frown on my face - this is real life and we want a home to enjoy!!

In some ways I commend your attitude and in other ways I don't.

You SHOULD think about death, so that you and the kids aren't on the street if your hubbie dies (god forbid).

You SHOULD think about these things because they CAN happen, then take the appropriate action (get insurance, write a will).

THEN you can walk round with a smile on your face not having to worry about a thing because you know you are covered.

I'm not saying you are ignoring these things, but if you are then the smile on your face is blissful ignorance or complacency which I would seriously warn you against.

I do agree with you however that you can't go around all day worrying about everything.
Getting insurance for death, sickness, accident is however a fairly standard financial precaution and something which you SHOULD consider.

Sometimes it's easier said than done. Just think how you would feel if the property prices drop by 25%. Even if you can afford the repayments then, no doublt you will be thinking "if I had waited a bit longer, I could have bought a more decent place in a more decent location for the same money".

    Great reply.

    I have a scenario...

"What if I am walking down the street, a child chases his ball into an oncoming car, I dive out to save him(her)... I save the child but, my life is taken from me...what if..what if...

Live life ...do it.. only regret mistakes you don't learn from...whoa..getting a bit philosophical..

That's kind of the reason why they make you take out insurances before you complete on the property.

    Sorry just seen your reply.
Quotes are usually used for quoting things not for replies, however I apologise for not reading it properly.

If you have it all covered then great - get on with it and enjoy your life and don't worry about climate change and bird flu :-)

If you are happy with the decision you've made then great.

I too made the same decision 3 years ago.
I don't find it quite so easy not to worry though.
I get really worried if I haven't got anything to worry about :-)

    Morpheus,

Excellent attitude. Do it and do it now, prices are on the increase and if you don't buy now you never will.

House prices go up, then they go down, then they go up a little more then they go down.

Always have, always will. I think that's a bit more accurate than "if you don't buy now you never will". I'm presuming that, in 10 years' time only millionaires will be able to buy one-bedders in Thamesmead then? Good luck to 'em.

The smart money will be elsewhere.

By the way, I'm still waiting for someone to explain why house prices are soaring in Ireland, when there's tonnes of supply and loads of land. Please can someone explain this to me. Because if that isn't the mother of all speculative bubbles, I'm a banana.

Actually many don't (although they might want to make you think that because they want to make money).

The insist on buildings insurance (as strictly speaking the building belongs to the lender).
Most don't force you to have anything else.

I don't have any insurance beyond what my employer offers and I don't have a formal repayment vehicle either (although I have my own "plans" for all eventualities).

I think everyone worries about things.

"Are my carrotts gonna grow the way I wanted them to"
"Will I still be able to continue my business in 10 years time"
"Is my house going to go down in value and then go up by 3 times the amount"

    Oh my god...worries..worries..worries

Hmm interesting, we were told that we had to have life assurance but it didn't have to be through them.

It only costs about a fiver on-top of the mortgage so it would have been silly not to get it really.
