It was given short shrift on Dragons Den.
Stick a bit of reflective foil behind, much cheaper.
That gum you like is coming back in style.
  • Ahh ... so saying 'featured on DD' is hiding the truth slightly.

    cheers

Whilst it seems like a good idea, there is absolutely no evidence that reflective foil(or any of these devices) behind a radiator saves any money.

Most heat from radiators is by convection/conduction not radiation.

The area of wall behind the radiator will reach the same heat as the rest of the wall by 'heat soak'.

Place a brick in a bowl of hot water with half of it submerged and the half that is out of the water will reach the same temperature as the rest of the brick.

If foil worked, we would simply need to line our rooms with foil to keep in all the heat.

Sounds interesting, could use the fans out of an unused computer.
Probably works on re-directing the convection circle.
    Mentioned here.

I have one of these and I do think it works. Definitely fans the air out of the radiator and into the room like a fan heater, you can feel the warm air being blown out the ends of the gadget.. A little bit noisy like a computer fan. If you have already have the spare parts you could make it yourself but buying the fans and the transformer would cost more than buying the whole thing.
  • Can't see where such devices would be useful. A small room would heat up relatively quickly a larger room and they would only push the heat out so far before it rose again.

@dianasnan have you turned the heating down as a result?
  • No its still set at 19 degrees but the boiler definitely doesn't seem to be on as much. Have a spreadsheet with our gas useage and will keep an eye on the readings. I will see at the end of a month whether it has made any difference to our bill.
We have a suspended wooden floor in the lounge/diner which can get cold despite good carpet and underlay and we don't seem to get any cold spots now which we did before. I am happy with it, but perhaps its not for everyone.

He reminds me of Tiny (tiptoe through the tulips)Tim.

    Found a picture OMG!

BTW In response to Cardew's comment I'm now sewing my reflective bubble wrap into clothing, with the addition of a suitable foil hat it will keep the heat in and protect me from the radiation from mobiles, microwaves and the CIA's spy satellites.
