Hi Guys hope someone can help, my 12 yr old wants to download music from the internet for his mp3. How do you do this and what sites are best to use.

Is this against the law to do??

Thanks

    It depends...

If you go Itunes or Amazon you can download from there perfectly legally. You'll have to pay for each track, though.

If he's talking about file-sharing sites such as Limewire then it's

    a) illegal

    and

    b) you're risking downloading some real nasties onto your PC.

There are other sites where you can get free stuff legitimately, too. Hopefully others can supply links..

if it's his pc in a room or what ever make sure you have good security software as it is easy to download nasties with illegal download sites . If its just music he is after do a google for last fm music streamed to the pc and free and legal .
  • I find itunes is really simple. Most tracks are 79p and are very quick to download. Its even better now they are not going to be restricted to Ipod MP3 players! You can download the software for free at the itunes website

You can find some cheap/free (and legal) mp3 downloads at we7.com and amiestreet.com. Mainstream pop songs won't be free, but there's a fair amount of other stuff to browse through.

If the player is not an Apple iPod, you're probably best avoiding iTunes as they don't use mp3 format, they use a format called AAC. This is not always compatible with other manufacturer's players and some of the music can't be played at all on non iPod players because it is copy protected.

I use either Amazon or 7Digital. Music supplied by both of these is in mp3 format and will play on all types of player.

I use Play.com 65p-70p each, cheap because you can make up your own albums thus avoiding songs you don't want.

If you download as a Zip file you get the artwork too.

You can buy a Nokia "it comes with music" phone and get free music downloads.
  • Try Jamendo http://www.jamendo.com/en/albums Not mainstream but free and a very wide choice. Might be some to your taste.

    bul!s!!t..

It isn't copy protected any longer, and hasn't been for, oooh the past 3 and a half weeks!!!!

the DRM was taken off, and the majority of tracks now, and all the tracks by the end of march will be DRM Free...

i just wish people would stop using that as an argument to not use itunes, when it's just NOT TRUE

also, with itunes, you download your DRM free HIGH QUALITY 256kbps track, right click, and choose convert to MP3 if you really must have it in the lower quality mp3 format!
  • There is a list of 10 free legal music download sites here
