Dell Screen Brightness... Any help please?

Just got my parents the free Dell that comes with AOL but the screen is much dimmer than my older laptop (although more glossy) and I find it quite uncomfortable to work at. Apart from ensuring display brightness is set to the max in the power options and that brightness is set to max by FN+upper arrow, is there any other way to increase the brightness of the screen? Thanks in advance for any help.
Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????

My old lappy (a Compaq so may not be relevant) had a power setting to dim the screen when on battery power.
If it is brighter when plugged in, it may be worth ploughing through the power save settings on the laptop. On mine, this is in addition to the fn-arrow feature.0 -
When I had my Dell laptop 18 months ago, I puzzled over this as well.
In the system tray there should be an application called Dell Quickset (although newer machines may be different). In this you can set the default brightness when you turn the machine on when connected to the mains or via Battery..
Hope that helps.

Thanks again for all who helped. Managed to solve the problem after several attempts
and for those who are interested it is easily done by accessing the BIOS settings (press F2 on startup) and then increasing the display brightness from there. Ahhhhhh, it is much better looking at the screen now.Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????0
