256 + 256 = 448????

Hello,
Just picked up my new PB 6100 Notebook (256MB ram) from PC World and decided upon the cheap 256MB ram upgrade for £22. Got it home, put the ram in, booted up....

448MBs ram???? What happened to the rest of it? The notebook comes with one stick of 256Mb ram. Could it have something to do with the 64MB shared Graphics Memory? (512-64 = 448!) At boot up, it shows only 448MB of physical ram.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Shared graphics will reduce the amount of RAM available to run a PC/Laptop.

Have you tried taking out the extra 256Mb to see if the standard 256Mb gives 192Mb available? That would confirm its the shared video.

Not yet, but the specifications say that the Graphics memory is shared.

I've told you this in the laptop thread - it is correct - the shared onboard graphics steals some of your memory - you can change how much so that it only about 9-16 if you like as I doubt you will need the ram for your graphics - it's a laptop it's not gonna run a game on it anyway.
  • Thanks for your reply, lellie, how do i change it?
