Have i done the right thing?

Hi everyone, just want to know if i've done the right thing in terms of selling on ebay (because i do feel a pang of guilt now - but i am usually such a push over/door mat! LOL i'm the seller who puts a buy it now price on at someones request for them not to buy the item after all!!)
I've just had an item finish tonight which is listed as courier postage. Had a few questions asking if local pick up is allowed but i have stuck to my guns and said no, postage only and even posted one of the questions on to the listing itself. I've had nothing but trouble in the past with ebayers collecting from me and find it easier to have bulky stuff sent by courier, atleast they turn up and do not suffer the 'ebay curse' on the day of collection!! anyway, the item has ended and straight away the winning bidder has sent me a message asking can she pick up because her 'friend lives in my town'
I've said no, sorry postage only due to having problems in the past with ebayers collecting items i now only offer items for postage.
I feel guilty, have i done the right thing?
I've been online pretty much all evening to answer any last minute questions but i do think its a bit rude of the winner to assume that she can pick up purely because she wants to without asking me, or even seeing that the same matter has been mentioned in a question on the page!!

You're entirely within your rights to refuse collection. My TV is broken!

Edit: refunded £515 for TV 1.5 years out of warranty - thank you Sale of Goods Act! :j0 -
If you don't feel collection is the right choice for you as a seller, then you are right to refuse it.
You haven't said that you will allow collection, so it's really upto the buyer to check before hand (which they should of really read anyway)
You're 100% right to stand by your decision.0 -
Thanks for the replies, She's still persistant though. saying how it 'seems silly' when she is 'so close'(over 20 miles away): She claims she only saw the item at last minute but still, assuming i will allow collection just because we are in the same county?? Thankfully if i do need to second chance the next highest bidder its only £1 less.If google doesn't know it, how should i?0

If it's a bulky item i'd let them collect (for cash only though). I've had some buyers not turn up for stuff (usually when they realise a 6ft dining table won't fit in their fiesta) but most do turn up. For me posting large items (especially by courier) is more of a pain than someone collecting in person.0

I'm not really a big seller but i'd say out of 10 items i've allowed collection for, atleast 8 of the people's cars have broken down, kids have taken ill, dogs have died & husbands have worked late... I must just attract them! Usually always the same thing happens.
They don't turn up on the day & time they say they will and then attempt to arrange collection at a time not convenient for me, and then either don't get back in touch or can only pick up in another week or so! I once had a lady come for an item 2 hours early and i could not get the item to the door for her as it was too heavy and my husband was not home at the time (hence why we'd arranged for later in the day!) she refused to call back later and i had to have her sat in the house with me awaiting my husband, which was rather uncomfortable and especially as i did state it was very heavy, why a woman on her own came for it, on behalf of her male friend i don't know? If he'd came he would have been able to take it straight away.
I also ended up with my first and only negative feedback when another person asked for a buy it now price and said she could collect the next day and pay cash(someone else bought that item instead pretty much straight away due to it being the cheapest on ebay) but then the other lady went on to purchase another item and queried if she could hit buy it now on another item, then come to look, and if unsuitable she would leave it and pay my fees (which i was cautious of but still said yes as she was meant to be coming anyway) then came excuse after excuse for 2 weeks, until i tried to cancel the transaction, she declined, paid for items by paypal and postage too, when i wasn't able to arrange a courier by the time she paid because i was due to have a baby and couldn't guarantee being at home, told her this and refunded. Suddenly the next day she wanted to collect arrrrggghhh! If google doesn't know it, how should i?0 -
I've gone right off of collection, I've been waiting since last Friday for people from freecycle to collect several items who haven't bothered and not even sent a message to say why. One person who was supposed to collect Saturday am early (and i got up and dressed specially) actually turned up last night at 9.20 without a word of apology.

That's the reason i left freegle, messed around so much by ungrateful and often cheeky people! I'm not sure if you saw my recent post about the stalkers i gained on there!! I really don't feel comfortable with giving my address out to people online now and having strangers (if they can be bothered) knocking on my door!
Will your items not go in a 'job lot' for car boot or similar on eBay if not individually saleable? I'm really overwhelmed with what i've sold recently and the prices, the same stuff i would have put straight on freegle a few months back (bundles of outgrown kids clothes) I've also just sold a box of random bits & bobs suitable for car boot, only £10 but i would have given it away in the past!If google doesn't know it, how should i?0 -
A chap emailed me to ask if he could collect a tiny item if he bid on it, I politely refused as he was 200 miles away and the postage was only £2.00.
He then sent me a very rude reply saying that I was unreasonable and that I must be 'making' on the postage!
Needless to say I blocked him from bidding - after informing him that the postage was actually £2.05 and I'd rounded it down."I'm ready for my close-up Mr. DeMille...."0 -
I might be in the minority, but I've had few problems with collection in person, either collecting from me or picking up from them.
Once I got woken up, but that was because I overslept not because they were early!
Oh, and we got a bit lost looking to collect a go-kart and knocked on what we thought was the right door only for a terrified looking little old lady who quite clearly thought we were escaped criminals of some kind to answer it and point us in the right direction :rotfl:
I've bought cars, and sold them, and bunk beds and all sorts, and had big items collected from me and never has anyone not turned up. Never.Mum of several with a twisted sense of humour and a laundry obsession
