  • Good morning everyone ,well my DGS Mikey's scooter helmet is fixed and cost me zilch.I first went to the local sewing /haberdashers shop, but the ones she had were 25mm and far too wide, the cobblers sadly didn't have any in stock so I eventually went to the camping/outdoor shop halfway between Rainham and Chatham. Its huge, and the lady was very helpful and said you can buy them at 20mm but they rarely stocked them. She suggested I look in a charity shop for maybe an old 'bum bag' or at a boot sale.

So feeling a bit defeated yesterday afternoon I was at DDs when the boys came in from school as usual..Mikey was a bit disappointed but I said I would email the firm that supplies them to the camping shop and see if I could buy a set direct from them. This perked him up no end .I had just made them their after-school snack when I had a light-bulb moment !!!.
I asked Mikey if he knew where his older brother Ben's bike helmet was. Ben is now 19 and away at Uni, and the bike has long gone as he was only about 12 when he had it. Mikey had a think, and said 'I think its at the back of the shed in the garden' off he went and came back with a very dusty battered looking childs bike helmet .The socket part fitted Mikeys helmet perfectly I took it off the old bike one and fitted it onto his scooter helmet .Result one very happy little ten year old with a safe scooter helmet again :):):) ,and one happy old granny whom it hasn't cost a bean .The bike helmet went into the bin as it really was past salvageing
I am so pleased as the problem has been fixed and Mikey can now happily tear around on his scooter(he also has elbow and knee pads ) Just shows how sometimes its lateral thinking fixes a problem.
I did a bit of shopping yesterday as well but not a great deal and I have more than enough to get through at least another 10 days and my food purse is still pretty full.:):)

Your story reminded me priz of myself a couple of years ago when I was in John Lewis' in Bluewater and liked a kettle in there.it was quite expensive though, but it was so nice and I thought well I don't buy a new kettle every day so I'll treat myself.
The helpful young chap got it down from the shelf and when I looked at it I said yes I'll have it he went of and then came back and said it was the last one they had but he couldn't find the box.I said I'm not fussed as the receipt is a good enough guarantee for JL.It was just under £60 but he said as there was no box he would reduce it to £29.99 I was happy as larry as it was virtually half price and as the box goes into the recycling I wasn't bothered. One reason why I almost alwas try JL first if I want to buy something, even if I have to save a bit extra I am so happy with their service. The young man was savvy as he knew that happy customers return:):):)

well today I am off to my U3A monthly meeting this afternoon and the speaker is talking about customs over the years at funerals :):):) as a lot of the attendees are probably near to them than most it should be an interesting afternoon:):):)plus we get a cuppa and a few biscuits and a chance to catch up with old friends who go to different clubs attached to U3A.
No more spending for me this week though and probably next week as well.
I love seeing all the photo's posted on here I think you are so inventive and the recipes are brilliant, well done fellow MMMers

Rose, thank you.My thoughts exactly about the quilting of it!

Foolishly my quilt is in squares but twisted so it doesn't have a straight edge but a zigzag.Previously I cut it up to make it square but am now in the process of replacing all those cut pieces.(I know how to make work for myself)The only thing I can think of is to sew a square on the back of each zigzag and then sew the back on square.I could always stuff it back in the airing cupboard and leave it to my daughter in my will !

Rose - your quilt is absolutely stunning - a real work of art. My aunt tried to show me to quilt when I was about 10 but I could never get the hang of it but I do so admire those who can do it so well like you.
Still, I can do basic sewing, knit & crochet & cook which is a lot more than some of the youngsters today!
Jackie - well done on the bike helmet. I'll also second your recommendation for JL. I needed a new printer last year & went to a local outlet area with a Com*t & JL. I particularly wanted a printer that didn't need all the cartridges full to run like the last one which cost me a bomb in inks. The girly didn't know what I meant! I went next door to JL - chap showed me exactly what I wanted ( choice of 3) AND a 3 year guarantee as standard. One happy bunny.
Off to do some more boat scraping today as its dry & maybe unpick cushion tonight :(
    Have a good day all

Cheerful - just reread last posts. Oxtail & Shin of Beef in the slow cooker is scrummy. I don't think I'd like oxtail on its own either.

  • We liked the red wine sauce that came with it, Silva. I did a Delia. ;) I think we'll freeze the rest of the wine and I'll use it at a later date. We seldom drink wine and never red but I've had two bottles given to use.
Its the same with sherry. Two bottles of that have been given as gifts. Dad thinks he's given me Irish Cream but it was Cream Sherry. It will do fine for trifles, a couple of recipes that I swap it into and when mum comes to visit. :D

I've got nothing fun done today. I can't wait to get back to my knitting. Silva, get that unpicking done and you'll feel fab. I had to go back 5 rows (of nearly 400 sts a piece  ) but I'm all happy now that I've been able to do half a row of 'going forward' now. :D

I've had to spend nearly all day dealing with a huge amount of paperwork. I have been avoiding this for some time, all relating to a very sad time in our life, but its been faced and all cleared out now. I feel exhausted now, so the rest of the day is going to be about relaxing.

DS was here and made dinner for us of Turkey Escalapes, HM spicy wedges, steamed carrots and peas. I really enjoyed it but everything tastes great when you get it cooked for you. :p

Viv - I think I saw Jamie O doing those wings and they looked amazing. I love wings. Will get that on the first page along with all the others. Thanks so much for sharing all these with us. ;)

  • Hello again, Everyone,

Talk about pride going before a fall! I had a very productive day. I did the ironing, de-pilled my sweaters, changed the bedlinen, cleaned out my two bedrooms, including moving and cleaning behind two chests of drawers and one cupboard, re-organised some of my drawers. I made soup with some of my 'one foot in the grave' vegetables and the scrapings from a carton of crème fraiche. I baked bread, I made myself some of 'our' gingerbread. I defrosted two of my store of chicken, onion and bacon pasties, and steamed the vegetables to go with it above my soup to save fuel and I managed to get a nasty mark off my silk-embroidered headboard (a leftover from my wealthier days).

So this afternoon I decided to catch up with yesterday's and today's quota of rug sewing. It was all going well - I got up to make a cup of tea and a sampling of the gingerbread and guess what I'd done? Somehow I managed to sew the silk scarf I was wearing into the rug! Time to stop for the day, I think.

You did the right thing, Cheerfulness, getting horrible paperwork out the way is hard but well done you.

Will put a nice dessert recipe on later as a reward.

    Viv xx
  • Cheerfulness - could you paste in 'how to make a rice pudding in a slow cooker' please? - my browser keeps on blocking the pop-up! I never thought of using my rice/slow cooker in that way - what a brill idea!

The link was for a traditional rice pudding but in the slow cooker we make lemony rice pudding this way:

    100g pudding rice
    1ltr milk
    2 tbls sugar
    grated zest of a lemon
    good shake of nutmeg
    1oz butter/spread/marg

Load all of the above into the slow cooker. Stir well and set off on low for 8-9 hrs or 5-6 on High.

Some suggest creasing the sides of the crockpot with butter/marg as it does have a tendency to weld itself round the top edge but I don't. I probably should as it would save elbow crease when washing up.

    Hello all
Tonight for tea I'm trying Viv's recipe for sausages and balsamic roasted onions with sweet potato wedges - it's currently cooking and smells amazing :) I've not got round to making the gingerbread yet but have decided I will do it at the weekend. It's OHs birthday and he's not a massive fan of cake so I think the gingerbread will go down very nicely instead.

I still haven't started my HM pillow protectors :o I've been off all day today so can't even use the excuse of being busy with work.
