My food processer gave up the ghost a while back and I have been managing without it. Only used it for a few random things anyway. I couldn't make fine breadcrumbs and so have started using the smoothie maker which was gathering dust. Works a treat and just the right size for a slice of bread.

What do you all think - is it worth getting another food processor when we can afford one? I have a handheld electric whisk -which rarely gets used either as I use my ordinary 'hand powered' one but no other food processing gadgets. Maybe a handheld blender? I want to have another go at making soups again (not very successful before) so guess I will need a blender.

I’m so enjoying this thread. There are so many good ideas and everyone is so positive, its great.
A few days ago I posted that I’d sewed some waterproof squares with cotton lining (to sit down on for thermos of coffee when on walks with wet ground/no benches) out of an old waterproof mac. Thanks cheerfulness4 for the photo link instructions

I also made some wine bottle sized drawstring gift bags out of the arms from the waterproof mac – I like to make giftbags for when I take a bottle of wine round to a friends house, they can then use the bag for anything they like

I hope these pictures work. Have a great weekend everyone!

Aaaaaaagh! I can't get the photos to work. I've uploaded them to photobucket and then clincked on the Direct Link (also tried IMG link) then it showed as @copied' and I pasted it into the post but they are just showing as web addresses not actually turning into the pictures - any suggestions?

SQ - I bought a £5 hand held blender from Wilkinsons about 18 months ago - its brilliant for soups. DH laughs at me every time the advert comes on TV for the 'Soup Maker' 'cos I keep saying 'whats wrong with a saucepan & a blender - same result and not over £60.00!!
Zebedy - I can't make the pictures work either - all I end up with every time I try is a little picture icon - shame we can't just cut & paste :(
Small victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle
  • Hi All! Soooo many tips and recipes to copy and paste :D Only managing to read the thread at the min cos we have got rid of tinterweb at home :( needed to free up the cash I think I might be getting addicted though - get all smiley when a new page is added :o

Cheerfulness - the 'beastie' comment made me giggle, the naughty part of me wanted to say 'depends what mood she's in' ;) dunno how she puts up with me :)

I was at a seminar this week and they told us that Mr T is reducing it's stock levels by 20k lines. It's mainly the bigger brands that are being streamlined eg the man from hell's mayo is sold is 5 different sizes, in the near future they will only sell 2 or 3 sizes - same goes for Mr K cereals, 0ral B etc. SOOOOO keep an eye on your discount shops like B&M, family b@rgains, home b@rgains etc as they are the types of places they will use to 'dispose' of the deleted lines - ready for us to pick up at a much better price :D Should start seeing them in the next month or so.......

I have a fab recipe for coconut macaroons that works every time - will dig it out ready for my next jaunt into wi-fi land :) TTFN x
  • Zebedy, can't think why its not working for you. I' m on my tablet at the mo and can't concentrate the same on that but I'll switch to my lappy and try and sort it out. I have an idea about the crossed box too silva because thats what I used to get when I first tried.

As regards blender purchases, I bought one of those sets with a hand blender, small goblet and flask like container (use that for milk shakes etc) and its in use daily. I still have a small blender fir large quantities of burger/sausage mix but the other set is most used.
The goblet is ideal for breadcrumbs, yorkie batter, icing, coleslaw, grated cheese, sml portions of burgers, etc. The wand does all my soups, mashes and lumpy sauces on bad days. The flask thingy makes the most creamy milkshakes and iced coffees.
Well worth the £19.99 I laid out for it.

  • Oh and chopped onions in the goblet and chillies. Hate chopping chillies and herbs. My hands got arthritis early, inherited unfortunately and this machine is invaluable for that reason.

  • Hello again, Folks, let's face it, if necessary we could all manage without gadgets as long as we had a source of heat to cook with and a good knife; but we don't have to. I've had a food processor since I first heard about them. And even now, when the time factor isn't the issue, I really wouldn't want to be without it - in any case mine was brand-new from a friend, who when she bought it, found she already had the exact same model in her cupboard! The only other kitchen gadgets I have are an elderly ice cream maker (I'm very popular with the grandchildren), a donated bread maker of doubtful origin, which I've only just started using and a cheap hand-held whizzer. I use the food processor almost every day as I smashed my elbow ten years ago and I find it easier when I'm preparing vegetables for soup, making pates etc.

That reminds me, someone said they didn't have much success with soup. The trick is to 'sweat' the chopped up vegetables in butter for ten minutes, making sure that they're well-coated by giving them a stir now and then. When you add the stock, bring back to the boil and then reduce the heat down to a simmer for around 45 minutes to blend/bring out the flavours.

I've just been in the freezer looking for something nice for tonight, found some good quality supermarket sausages; this is a great recipe - ancient as it has my ex-husband's writing on it - and is what I'll be doing later.

Sausages with balsamic-roasted onions - serves 2-3, but I would say four by the time you've added other vegetables.

454gram pack good quality sausages, 2 peeled onions, 2 peeled red onions, 8 shallots (don't worry if you haven't got any, just miss them out) 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar, 4 tbsp. olive oil, tbsp. light brown sugar, 15gram fresh sage, chopped, 4 peeled cloves of garlic, salt and freshly ground black pepper.

Pre-heat the oven to 190 degrees/gas mark5. Cut the onions into wedges, leave the shallots whole and place onions and shallots in a small roasting tin. Douse with 3 tablespoons olive oil and the balsamic vinegar, then add the brown sugar, sage and garlic. Season and cook in the oven for 25 minutes, turning once or twice during cooking, until the onions are tender and are starting to carmelise at the edges. In the meantime heat the remaining oil in a frying pan, brown the sausages over a medium heat, then add them to the roasting pan with the onions. Continue to cook for a further 15-20 minutes and serve with mash and vegetables. This is very warming and filling.

So now I've no excuses, I need to give the living room a good once over.

    Viv xx
  • Afternoon all!

On the theme of blenders...I don't have one - I used to but only used it for smoothies - and it was more of a dust-gatherer than anything else.

However, I do have a mini electric chopper...wouldn't be without it!....and an electric whisk.....and a real necessity - my battery-operated tin-opener. (I am disabled and don't have the coordination for knife work or using a ;conventional' tin-opener)...I also have a breadmaker - I CAN bake a loaf in the oven, but fond kneading is getting more and more difficult, if I want then I can put my own ingredients in the bread maker, mix and knead it and then take it out and bake in the oven....usually I just do a full breadmaker loaf!

Had a free cup of tea today...our local library has a very decent caf! (AND it is super disability-friendly!) and they run a loyalty scheme...free cup of tea or coffee after every 6 purchases.

Sausage and veggie bake tonight...sausages are out of the freezer (I bag them in little solo-portions of two sausages before freezing)...I know I have tomatoes and courgettes to use up...and I will probably add an onion and I think I might chop an apple into the mix....splash of oil and some pepper and chilli and into the oven....Homemade pineapple and coconut joghurt for afterwards.

Thanks Viv we know Lincolnshire quite well, we are quite close by only 30miles from Lincoln, it's Thorpe Park at Cleethorpe's only an hour away.
I forgot to say yesterday I picked up some YS goats milk which I'd never had before only ever had cheese previously. Well I was going to make some rice pudding and freeze some but no pudding rice when I got home. I poured alittle into a glass and did the taste test, very very creamy so decided to use for Drinking chocolate and I will use the rest this evening, not bad for 25p for 1 litre. Hope we are all keeping warm and toasty.
Why pay full price when you may get it YS ;)
