Savvy Shopper! I've been Money Tipped!
Just had an idea. I really like the flavoured syrups you can buy to go in coffee but they're about £3 a bottle. Looking at the ingredients, it's mainly sugar and vanilla. Do you t hink I could make something that would be similar? I've just made a lemonade (found out about it during dry January) which starts with a syrup of sugar, water and rosemary, then mixes in freshly squeezed lemon juice. It's surprisingly delicious. I thought vanilla might work the same way, any suggestions very welcome!

have you tried making vanilla sugar? Just put a vanilla pod in some sugar and then leave it for a while. The taste transfers very easily. Nice for coffee.

  • Princesskitty- now the fun begins. You must be excited and don't forget Sewing Bee on Thursday night to have something to aim for. :D Oh and besides your oil, new needles and tweezers to remove fluff you will need one other essential. A sausage dog pin cushion! Mine will never leave my side now. ;)

Today is going to be money saving. DS and DH in bed having said they don't want tea. One has stomach cramps and the other had some particularly nasty treatment at the dentist which I'll say no more about because it made me faint to hear. _pale_

Caroline- I constantly use OOD seed and in most cases, even the seeds that will supposedly only germinate if fresh, I get good results. ;)

sashnut, don't suppose you could sell on those sewing machine feet? Perhaps you could claw a little back.

After a lovely, cheap day yesterday with mum I feel zinged up for the rest of the week. We lunched on chicken salad fajatas using l/o roast chicken from Sundays roast.
The chicken was YS'ed and very big for £2.05 bought a bit ago.

She fetched goodies with her so gifted food was 2x sml uncut tiger loaves, 2 x chocolate bickkes and a packet of crisps each. Yum.

This morning I made one of my favourite breakfasts. French toast with banana, yogurt, honey and sprinkled with linseeds.

Seemed to have missed lunch due to catching up with some paperwork so have just grabbed a tuna mayonnaise salad sandwich with some of my lovely YS Oat and Barley bread. If I get hungry later I may just have some corn on the cob with herby 'butter' as it is calling me. :p

Am going to begin another row on my circulars. Not saying I'll get to the end of it. Its my first pattern row.

Ginger and honey biscuit recipe - yes please Viv! :j

    MAY GROCERY CHALLENGE   £0/ £250

  • :rotfl:By special request, Honey and Ginger Cookies - from the American Museum - it says 'these cookies have a way of disappearing, so you may wish to double the recipe', and I can vouch for that. I made this today and got around 40 biscuits. I can only get the little smiley men to sit at the beginning - what am I doing wrong, please?

Anyway. 3 cups of flour, half a cup of butter, one and a quarter cups of sugar, one egg, quarter cup of honey, three quarter teaspoon bicarbonate of soda, one and a half teaspoons ground ginger, pinch of salt.

Cream butter and sugar until smooth. Add egg and honey. Sift dry ingredients, add to mixture. Roll into small balls. Place on baking sheets and flatten slightly (I use the back of a fork). Bake at 180 degrees for 10-15 minutes.

Don't blame me if you have a dieting lapse!

:) Hi Sashanut, would you be able to post a photo of the presser feet, or a link to what you bought, so's we could have a look at them and see if we can puzzle it out together?

My present machine is an Elna and the presser feet release by pressing a small lever behind the foot (they just drop) and the other feet are just positioned in place so their horizontal bar is below the stem of the presser foot holder and you put the foot down and it clamps on. My 1970s Singer wasn't dissimilar so it's likely to be some variation of lever to release and snap-on for the new foot. Sorry but I've never owned a Brother and haven't used one since college and memory doesn't serve to well on some details after 30 years.

It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!
  • URGENT MESSAGE FOR GreyQueen DO NOT try melting your watch straps together!!! I have a degree in Chemistry and please, please, please believe me - there are some VERY nasty chemicals in the coloured resin watch straps! You will release these by melting the material. You could then breathe them in. This could do you some considerable damage. these things will take thousands of years to decay (the evil of plastics) and, over time, will cause where ever they are buried to turn toxic because these chemicals will be released.

PLEASE do not mess with these things you'all - I am all for make do and mend but we do have to consider safety!

Oh Wow, marzipan flavoured syrup. I would love that! Great links Mary. :D

Viv - you need to click where you want the smilie before you click on it and it should arrive in the right place.
They misbehave sometimes and go to the beginning of the post like yours did, so in that case I just drag them to where I need them. (by clicking and holding the left mouse button down and pulling to reposition and then releasing the left button). You prob know how to drag but there if others didn't. ;)

Lynplatinum, forgot to say earlier how grateful I was for the vegetable bargains heads up. I love peas and 2kg for 89p in very good. I'll have to have a gander when I can get near an Iceland and restock.

    Spends for today.

Just 3x milk @ 89p each from the grocery budget.
Now a rogue item found its way into the basket when I sent DH to pick my shopping up today and it definitely WAS NOT on the list.
So 75p has now had to be deducted from my extras budget for a packet of Aldis Chocolate butter Biscuits.

DH nevers does things like that. Sure sign he was sickening for something. :p

  • Today I went into my local corner shop and asked for 6 2nd class stamps - after all my spending the other day I had failed to check what was in my purse - as I tipped out my coins I had to laugh £3.10 seemed such a lot of money!! I said to the shop owner 'Raj - i m not sure if I have enough!' We both laughed and he said 'Its alright - you can take them - I know you'll pay me back!! You are taking after your boys!' :rotfl: (When my kids were little they would go down to the shop and sometimes be short by a few pence and I was always very cross with them and made them go straight back down the road and apologise to Raj and pay up!)

Luckily I just had enough but I got teased rotten by Raj who asked when I was going to grow up LOL It is wonderful to have such lovely, understanding people to run our cornershop!

So yet another spending day but I needed to post a bill off!
BUT I really fancied a take away again today - got home from work cold dark and smell of local Indian takeaway in my nose!! Went home and made a wonderful Dum Aloo or Indian potato curry from what I had around - it took 25 mins! and cost pence! Carry on saving folks!
