As a tax payer, I'd be expecting someone serious about looking for work, and looking for my sympathy, to be applying for a minimum of 10 per day.

After 4 weeks I'd expect you to have applied for everything within travelling distance.

On the 3 occassions I've had to look for work, I've averaged 15 a day, although I appreciate that eventually you've applied for every job via 17 different agencies, and then you are forced to really focus on hunting out jobs that don't even exist.

I think it would depend very much on the job. I know from experience, I couldn't possibly apply for more than two jobs a day due to the huge amount of effort needed to tailor each application. But then I would be looking to apply for highly skilled jobs.

If I were applying for say retail jobs - then that would be rather different.

It all depends whats available to apply for. This was near christmas.

the reasons for the sanction were not applying for enough jobs, in their opinion. I found as many as i could.

Do you have an old Jsag or the new Claimant commitment type?

If you have the old type Jsag, so long as you meet the specified number of job applications every week there should be no problems. However, if you failed to reach that number, you should have a look at this FOI.

Sorry unable to post links - whatdotheyknow/request/173454/response/430925

Giving your "adviser" a reason for not applying for every unsuitable vacancy sounds unreasonable to me, but getting unemployment down below 7% requires desperate measures. They are very desperate!

    Hope you claimed hardship instead.

There is no specified number of job applications, there are a specified number of steps a claimant should take.

Just out of interest - are people really expected to apply for 200 jobs a week (or even a fortnight). Does seem a little excessive ...

200 per week is excessive, unless you include jobs not within travelling distance (advisor will just say relocate with no consideration on relocation expenses) and jobs that cannot financially sustain you.

Back when I was claiming JSA I applied for roughly 40-60 jobs per fortnight on average using a standard CV and covering letter template that I wrote. Changed a couple words and sent to another employer. I added some tailored applications for jobs I really wanted on top of this list.

He stated there were 200 jobs on UJ i could have gone for.
He couldn't know there were 200 suitable jobs without checking details of each job.

Job searches don't tell you details within each job.

It was just an example about saying something without proof. You cant go to court and say things without evidence why is it different for the jc staff.
Yes, I realised what it was. JC will no doubt extract the jobs you could have applied for from the system for evidence. What evidence will you present?

What about the OP's situation, advisor claiming there are 200 jobs they could apply for, without any proof ?
  • OP I would be contacting your MP at this stage. I think it is disgraceful that you are not allowed to be presented with these 200 jobs so you can form a defense why you did not apply for them, providing evidence (for example if the buses do not run in time for a start time you could provide copies of the bus timetable etc) a third party could then decide if your reasons for not applying are valid or not.

I am not saying this is the case but has anyone thought the the advisor could be lying/wrong! I don't know the area you live but 200 suitable jobs seems excessive to me. It seems an advisor can say you missed any amount of jobs without having to prove what they say is a fact. If that is the case there is no hope for anyone to defend themselves, every single job seeker could sanctioned if they come across a less than honest advisor.
Advisor is saying there were 200 jobs OP could have gone for but didn't apply for enough. That suggests they applied for little or none in the period. Suggested further by OP's reluctance to say how many they did apply for, despite asking for advice.

Having not applied for enough jobs they were referred for not actively seeking employment and/or showing enough commitment to finding work.

Given OP's poor attitude and what's presented so far my money's on sanction upheld.

    200 per fortnight.
    100 per week.
    20 per weekday.
So a 9-5 day means roughly 25 minutes per application.

Assuming your CV will not be changing much (tweaks for particular jobs, highlighting different skills etc.) not to much of a task.
Agree, it is easy to apply for 200 jobs in 2 weeks.

200 relevant, real jobs? Not so easy to find! Had OP evidenced that they had seen the 200 and provided reasons for not applying then I agree, unlikely to be sanctioned.
I wonder if Further Education works like that, judged by computer searches and a calculator.
