We have had a lot more problems with mould since we had loft insulation.
You can't win, can you?I wanna be in the room where it happens0 -
Well its been tipping down, blowing a gale and hailing today,. I know its Wet Wales but really taking the mickey today.
I work in Newport and I have never seen the river so high, several areas had severe flood alerts and residents were evacuated. A brand new Sainsbugs superstore was right in the area of severe warning and the staff were all waiting for the flood, makes you wonder about planning strategy etc.
Thinking about a SHTF situation that would test my preps I think I would only want an "easy!" trial run that would test my in car preps and possibly my "get home bag" contents. I wonder how I would cope with the inability to get home due to poor weather, blocked roads etc I havent planned particular routes home as I work about 10 miles from home and I know the countryside very well. I am wondering if I would stay put or try to head home. I know I would ring my OH as he could get to me with either the landrover, tractor or one of the diggers!!! If I had to get to a meeting place I would like to know how what I have prepped helped and what I had right or wrong!
With regard to a major SHTF situation I too wouldnt want anything to happen; life is difficult enough without having to worry about zombies breaking in! LOL
I went back to sainsbugs and bought more of their reduced xmas big candles plus ones in jars that I realised were like le Parfait jars and had seals as well, smelly candle first, jam later!
THis weekend I will be de-xmasing the house and hopefully starting the big freezer stock take. I did start keeping a record but failed to keep it up as I was adding /taking so many YS bargains. I will be putting the stock takes with the freezers in the hope I will remember to update when I take things out.
Next week I will be digging the heated propagator out and planting chillies, peppers etc as they take ages to mature. I will try and find my seed stash and see what I need and what I really must throw away....... very hard for me!! I hoard seeds even those I know wont grow!!
I think that the free ebook website, posted a couple of pages back, will be addictive! I think I downloaded about 10 just yesterday! I hope to get time , with my new year resolution of more time for me!, to actually read all of them. Last night I read The Survival Tin, the survival kit you can carry in your pocket. I found it easy to read even though USA based and it had some good ideas that I will be adding to my everyday carry items. I do carry a survival tin kit in my handbag plus pen knifes, multi tools etc but it had some good ideas for items that could be used for more than one purpose plus refreshing my memory regarding things I mean to add or substitute in my bag. Carrying one in my pocket would be difficult with office clothes so handbag will have to do.
With people reporting reductions in gas/electric payments it will probably give me the kick I need to look at swapping suppliers, I only have electricity as gas is bottled and heating is mainly wood. I need to look at telephone and internet suppliers but to be honest its a bit boring! and its one of the things I really need to do but I'm putting it off.
Anyway hope everyone stays safe and dry in all this horrible weather, Elaine

We live in a 1960's house with wood cladded dormer windows upstairs. In the 22 years we have lived here keeping the house warm during winter has been an annual nightmare. Due to the cladding being on it's last legs we have just had it replaced and what an eye opener it was when the workmen removed the old materials, all that has been between us and the elements is the interior plasterboard, 1/4 inch thick manky insulation and matchstick thin wooden cladding
This has now been replaced by 3 inches of insulation, a waterproof membrane and UPVc cladding (was worried about it looking tacky but from the ground looks just like wood). We have also had a porch built onto the front door and for the first time ever we are warm all the time. I know the weather has been mild but never before have we had our storage heaters on number 2 intake setting at this time of year, we have always had them on number 6 (highest they go).
Took a while to save for it and are now flat broke but it's been money very well spent. Plus we can now keep coats in the porch and free up the understairs cupboard for more food stocks...win, win situation then :TPeople Say that life's the thing - but I prefer reading
The difference between a misfortune and a calamity is this: If Gladstone fell jnto the Thames it would be a misfortune. But if someone dragged him out again, that would be a calamity - Benjamin Disreali0 -
I wonder how I would cope with the inability to get home due to poor weather, blocked roads etc.
If it was really bad before I set off, I'd stay put.
If I got part way home and got stuck, I'd hunker down in the car, and wait it out.
Aside from my regular emergency equipment (Jumper Cables, Fire Extinguisher, 1st Aid Kit, etc.), I also keep a personal emergency pack in the car.
This contains:-
2x Space Blankets.
2x Mars Bars.
2x Blackfiers Flapjacks.
1x Torch/lamp.
1x 500ml bottle of water.
1x pack of baby wipes.
1x Notebook.
2x Pencils.0 -
Last night I read The Survival Tin, the survival kit you can carry in your pocket.
You can buy them pre-packed.
I carry this one, from BCB.
£24 from Amazon UK, P&P free.
It comes with the basics, but still has room to add a few extra items, to suit your needs.
I augmented mine with a metal signalling mirror, a proper candle, two strips of fabric plaster, a cigarette lighter, a miniature torch, half a dozen lancets, a tube of Potassium Permanganate, and even a space blanket.0 -

I'm being tested at the mo. Since before Christmas the dog has barely been eating a thing. Apart from the worry and the vets bills - have been driven to cooking/buying all sorts to tempt her - not to mention running round like George Galloway (but in dog mode not cat mode) pretending to fight her for her kibble and even pretending to eat it on occasion..
Yesterday I shelled out a cool £75 for another appointment and for blood tests.
Following which she promptly started eating.
Note to self: Should have got the pet insurance.
Hope your canine pal is going to be ok. Have you looked at the PDSA ? depending on your circumstances perhaps you could get some help from them.
More than once I've crawled around and tried to encourage the cats to eat by pretending to eat their food and also when trying to encourage them to use a new cat flap :rotfl: The looks they gave me. Took one of them (sadly no longer with us) 6 wks to sus out the cat flap. It was bigger and he'd just sit and look through the window till we opened the door :rotfl:
Good isn't it, We watch so much on you tube via the tv, some really good informative stuff.
Especially useful for finding out whats really going on baring in mind how carp the normal tv news is.

So far we have been lucky not to have been affected by the weather but we have water and candles alternative selection of cooking stoves plenty of flasks and food etc. Have had to rely on oh more this last week as I have done something to my back and lost my mobility somewhat. As his carer this has not been a good start to the new year but we are muddling through. tonight I had a crown fall out just as the dentist shut for the w/e so soft food and soup for a few days I think. Just as well I'd made a big bowl of jelly and custard the night before.0 -

Interesting, I don't have a kindle but did take a look and read the review. Just the other night we were watching RT and they were doing a news piece on a new drug called crocodile I think. It is addictive and kills within a year of using ! At the time we saw it we both wondered if it was a way of population cleansing and had been developed for that purpose. Who knows what measures those in charge will go to.0 -
We had mould problems in the upstirs rooms when we first did a big top up of loft insulation particularly on the ceiling coving in the bathroom. He Who Knows did a bit of research and went back up into the loft and pulled the edged of the insulation back a couple of inches which enabled the loft to 'breathe' and the moisture up there to escape, not get captured in the insulation and hang around making everything damp and mouldy. Before he did that we had ice forming on the underside of the roof felt in really cold weather, just moving back the insulation cured that too, hope that's useful, Lyn xxx.0

No rain atm, but pretty dull, overcast and dismal.
Yesterday was a (very rare for me) NSD, principally because I didn't leave the street all day.0
