turn off the touchpad features if they are part of the problem

if it's new, it could be downloading lots of updates, check task manager to see what's going on

AMD E1-1200 APU CPU Benchmark of 709

Intel Celeron 1000M CPU Benchmark of 1756

The selling point of the AMD is low power consumption.

If you don't need the long battery life, consider returning it.

Better this Satellite C50-A-146 for £229.99 Some state Satellite C50-A-19T
The first has Windows 8, the second 8.1.

or even this Medion Akoya/E6234/MD98409 for £204.99

Thank you for a very informative post. I dont really need long battery life, it spends all its life plugged in. I have had a fiddle this evening, done some of the suggested things, and im starting to come to terms with it.

  • I had a laptop with lots of touchpad gestures and it drove me mad, as Closed said, turning them off and just having a basic touchpad may solve many problems you're having.

Or for a bit more cash but a much more powerful CPU, consider this

    Asus X501A-XX280H

I have my eye on one of these myself.

Try and remove the crapware (http://pcdecrapifier.com/download) and stuff like Norton/MacAfee type programmes and instead use Windows firewall and Microsoft Security Essentials.

Also, try upgrading to Windows 8.1, which is slightly less annoying.

That said, unless you picked it up for a song I'd get rid. The Amazon reviews are not encouraging.

Works fine for me and doubtless millions of others.

There is always a lot of willy waving on which AV currently has the best detection rate but many infections are with ancient viruses which they will all pick up. The real secret to avoiding infections though is largely a case of engaging the computer between your ears.

Independent tests disagree with this statement.
e.g. 'Which' puts it top of the recommended AV programs - ahead of paid for packages like Bullguard and Avira.
Paid for AV may not be necessary! (good MSE advice!)

    http://www.pcpro.co.uk/news/security/384394/microsoft-security-essentials-is-designed-to-be-bottom-of-the-antivirus-rankings

av comparatives aug-nov 2013 detection summary

    avira 99.4% - 3 stars
    avast 98.7 % - 3 stars
    avg 95.7% - 1 star
microsoft mse 91.9% - worst of all those tested (22 av products). baseline

    http://www.pcpro.co.uk/news/security/386185/microsoft-security-essentials-misses-39-of-malware-in-dennis-test

The most effective protected against between 98 to 99 per cent of threats, while the least effective (Microsoft Security Essentials) was compromised by 39 per cent of the threats.

Avast! Free Antivirus 8 was the most effective free anti-malware product, followed at some distance by AVG Anti-Virus Free 2013.

In terms of protection, the top five products were from Kaspersky Lab, Symantec, Trend Micro, ESET and Avast!. All but Avast!’s product require a license that costs money.

    This is which's scoring system

The security software score ignores price and is based on:
    • Ease of use 55%
    • Performance 40%
    • Features 5%

The primary goal of any AV is Detection and infection prevention - it should have far more weighting than ease of use (which is very subjective).

    That is true.

And for a better experience, you could upgrade to Windows 7!:)
