These underlined links are all over the site now and often bear no resemblance, when clicked, to the highlighted word.

Why are we getting them and can I get rid of them?

Nothing on our site works this way. Skimlinks does not work this way. Skimlinks is turned off by default for registered users. So you'll probably find it's turned off already. You can read more about Skimlinks here.

But there is unfortunately plenty of software out there which does work exactly as you describe. Often it's referred to adware or malware. It can come bundled with other software you might want to install. Or it can sneak onto your machine with a trojan or virus. Sometimes you can disable or uninstall it. Assuming you can find it. Sometimes it's even more difficult to get rid of.

I would recommend speaking to whoever supports your PC. But you might also read our guide to free anti-virus software.
