Hi all,

Have been with NPower since May10th (when we moved into this property). They haven't yet sent any bills/invoices, and despite setting up a DD with them for £100/month on June 6th, they have yet to take any money (their error, apparently a computer glitch).

So having spoken to them today I am concerned that I am going to be landed with a bill for £300 on 1st August, and would like to make sure I actually owe them this, so have taken meter readings. So I have a reading from the day we moved in, and then one taken tonight.

How the heck do I work out how much this equates to in £??? If it is of any use, Electricity is 981 and Gas is 45. What does this mean?

TIA
K xx

Also, it appears that our gas usage is ridiculously low... (have just done a google search). But since we moved in i've not used the heating and so the only gas i've used it for the hob, so its probably going to get a lot higher in the winter right?? I have photos of the meter readings on the day we moved in, and the ones today so I know they are accurate

OK - Assuming the figures you have given are acuarately based on the meter reads from when you moved in up to today, your Gas Bill so far will be around £20 odd and the Elec roughly £137

As a 'new' customer n'power will have put you on their "Standard" tariff which is the most expensive - Switching to Direct Debit payments with online billing will be cheaper - However n'power have some odd ways of doing the accounting - Do a web search on them

Electric at 981 units over 2.5 months is high at 4,700kWh per year. How is the water heated? Some cylinders have a backup immersion heater that people forget to turn off. The electric would then be used to heat the water rather than the gas.

    Hi SchminkyCat,

I'm a little concerned that you haven't yet received a bill, or that the direct debit that you've set up doesn't seem to be coming out.

If you can send me all the details over to forumresponse@npower.com, I can get this looked into for you?

    Many thanks,

    Adam

Can't work out the gas just from a reading, either way it doesn't seem you have used much but if you have an imperial (cubic feet) meter 1 unit on the meter is roughly 32 kwh's, if it is metric (cubic metres) then its about 11 kwh's per unit.

Put your kWh figures into any comp site (you will have to do the gas conversion to kWh first), select your tariff, enter your postcode, and it will instantly tell you the cost. About 2 minutes work.

Thanks everyone for your help. Macman, I have tried using comparison sites, but haven't found them to be very easy to use or understand. Most give out some many different results I have no idea which one is the right one.

Thanks for clarifying that davidgmmafan - I had no idea, so again have been using the comparison sites completely wrong!

HappyMJ - no immersion heater has been on, however I work from home so have a laptop/printer etc on all day everyday, and also usually have the TV on in the background, which may explain it.

Dogshome - You are right, i've managed to work out from registering online that I am on a standard tariff which is quite a bit higher than others, despite paying by DD each month (ha, or NOT as the case is here!). Not sure whether I can change though as we may not be here come Feb and I don't want to get tied into anything until we have decided what to do.

Adam @ Npower. I emailed you yesterday evening at the address you gave above, but have had no response as yet.
  • Just wanted to ad an update. Someone did get in touch from NPower and apologised for the lack of service that i've received. He has calculated my current usage based on my meter readings, and has assured me that my direct debit will start in September (4 months after moving in here!!).

However as a goodwill gesture they have also credit my account with £75, which I am very happy with.

Mostly we just see complaints about companies, so I thought it would be nice to post something positive!
