what is happening at the banks?

What really IS going on? I know natwest is having problems and now also nationwide and RBS. We don`t bank with those but have been personally affected as our yearly pension payment has not arrived. I believe that the sipp providers use RBS so that will explain it but it is all being kept very quiet considering that very many people and companies are being affected

We bank with Halifax and my husbands wages haven't gone in this morning, they said to phone his employer which he did and all they said was its been paid as normal, Halifax said there is a problem due to a fault so at this moment we are penniless and no one can help
not all on benefits are scroungers and don't need to be bullied!
  • This better not have spread to Halifax, have some important payments going in today, fingers crossed!

I can still log in to Nationwide and late last night I transferred money, so there doesn't seem to be a problem for me with Nationwide anyway.

Nor is there an issue between Nationwide & Halifax as I got my housekeeping this morning from DH.

One suspects the banks have been hacked. Its not something any one bank would like to admit, particularly in letting all customers know there is a major security breach. Lets call it technical difficulties and freeze the accounts until we find the breach.

I suspect that the bank has been hacked, but cannot let anyone know and so are using the phase "technical difficulties".

    Kind of worrying.

That's what I would guess too, especially given some are having problems with other banks too.Makes the most sense doesn't it!

There is no hacking, and it's highly unlikely that any hacker would be technically able to cause the sort of problems seen on this occasion. The RBSG spokeswoman I heard at lunchtime said the root cause was a software change that failed, with much of the problem then being due to the time it takes to recover to a known position (before the change was made) then re-apply all of the transactions that should have been processed since then. It was clearly a significant issue, in the 15 years I spent in IT there we never had such a wide-ranging fault that took so long to clear up (although I suspect the bosses may now be regretting their decision to make a large proportion of the people who knew about those systems redundant and transfer support to staff in India).
