'easy discounts' - energy!

Hi all, I stumbled across this info yesterday, and am pretty much copying it here in case it can help any MSE users. I tried it and it took a two or three minute phonecall and really does WORK!

IF ANY 2 OF THE FOLLOWING APPLY TO YOU....

* on a low income

* have a child under 5 years old

* on income support

* on any form of disability premium

* disability living allowance

Then please 'google' warm home discounts - followed by your electric provider - apply on the page you are directed to - and you will get a rebate of £120 applied to your account by the end of March this year. When I first accessed the page I couldnt continue without entering a valid account number and as we had gone from quarterly billing to a meter (with a pre-loaded debt of £700 which is taken at £1 a day). Nearly gave up - but got a phone number and called them (Southern Electric) - very helpful - and they have applied discount that will either be a reduction in the debt by £120 or will get a £120 credit (they couldnt be sure which) The only thing they ask of you is to be willing to provide proof of qualifying benefits if they should ever ask.

This is called 'WARMER HOME DISCOUNTS' Its a government funded scheme which they are not to quick to tell people about!

Good Luck - Scott

    I just contacted EDF no surprise I don't qualify. Despite receiving long term IB,HRM and LRC dla . Even when I transfer to ESA it will be contribution based so I still won't qualify.:(

    BG told me I wont qualify this year even though we have someone on dla. They also told me even if I did qualify you qualify subject to being on certain incomes from october last year and that all utilities companies have this time limit. As I am on essentials tariff I am already own lowest tariff and getting some benefit that way so they said. Odd when I checked in August last year there cheapest tarrif was not essentials tariff but online save x.
  • I've just updated an a~n~other~thread, but just in case people reading this don't spot it .. .. at the risk of boring you I'll DUP it here !

    The situation has changed since last summer, all those who are automatically 'passported' should receive [ without asking ] a letter from their supplier informing them of their automatic right to this benefit. They know little of your personal benefit details, the little they do know is a complex subject I won't go into here, sufficient to say they don't know you .. .. they know only your MPAN. Those in the passported group should hear from their supplier in writing before the end of Feb this year .. .. and must return the signed document before the 28th March this year.

    Those in the 'vulnerable ' group even though they have no automatic passport rights may still qualify for a rebate and should apply in the usual way.

    they will probably in feb when they will ask for proof of eligibility(dla letter etc),then the £120 will be credited at end of march,and for 4 years after that if you still qualify

    I have been having a few problems keeping the house even vaguely warm this winter. Moved into a private rented house, moved rubble from loft and insulated it (£1 a roll insulation thanks to npower).., inspite of having a heart attack in November.., but it just had to be done.

    I've been using gas and electricity minimally, keeping limited things on, turn off at the plug etc but still finding I was putting in £40+ a week into the prepayment meters supplied in the house. This was quite a bit more than what I was paying by DD in my previous house (same size) but because I still had some money owing on that bill (one of Eon's customers who got a suprise £1,400 bill after almost a year of useage - paid most of it off but not all). I didn't see how I could get a credit meter and a better tariff. British Gas, the supplier of where I live now were most unhelpful.., then I discovered Npower would supply credit meters if u paid £60 each. I changed over to Npower with my prepayment meters and was told there was a possibility I could get the credit meter changeover done for no charge because of having a son with disabilities. I was also told about the Warm Home discount.

    With the changeover of suppliers happening tomorrow.., I've just come off the phone to Npower.., yes I can have the changeover to credit meters for no charge.., yes I can get the Warm Home Discount (but will be a delay ., still good to know its there). So feeling like the light is definitely at the end of the tunnel (no pun intended lol). I was feeling so trapped as there was nothing more I could do to cut our useage of utilities and this will help enormously.

    - those in the Core Group should have had a letter hit the mat sometime between mid-November 2011 and the end of February 2012
    - the Big Six, signed up for the automatic Core Group scheme, other smaller energy providers offer 'broader group schemes'
    - as far as I'm aware the disgusting truth that £5.71 of that rebate in the form of a VAT is clawed back to the treasury

    NOTE: To deannatrois, its not a delay my friend, you get it after the period not before the period starts. I assume that in your case you were not a [primary] 'passported' group claim but a [secondary] 'vulnerable' group claim. Because of your previous debt history the use of pre-payment rather than credit metering means your tariff would be about 15% on average higher.
