Cold Calling on my BT Phone

Options
Hi folks...

I'm getting really annoyed with the amount of recorded 'sales' calls and others through my BT phoneline....most are recorded and are silent to begin with, but really, it's all too much of an inconvenience now...

how can I STOP these calls?
Warm regards

Registering with the TPS is quite effective in eliminating UK-origin cold calls (provided the company concerned complies with the legislation). Unfortunately, most cold calls originate from overseas these days and the TPS has no effect on them.

However, a Call Blocker or a Truecall device would do the trick.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • thanks guys; that's really useful info! :)

  • The TPS doesn't seem to stop us from getting at least 3 PPI cold calls per week. They call during the day implying they are returning a call from my husband. When I found out who they were, I told them my husband had not called them, to remove our number from their database and not call back. They became very snide and aggressive saying that they could only do that if they talked to my husband. After I repeated my request, the man say: First, how do you know your husband didn't call us and, second, how do you know this isn't important? I lost it and screamed at him and hung up. The laughable part is, if my husband had called them unbeknownst to me, why would he have given the home number so they would call when he wasn't there and I was? He could have used his work/mobile number. Idiots!!!!

After being away for a few days, we found 3 missed calls from them from different numbers. I have reported them to the telephone preference service which we subscribe to (but seems to make no difference). Is there no way to stop these people making these calls?

If you register with TPS it can take 28 days to come into full force. I don't seem to have a problem with any cold calling.
Of course other actions will help too. Don't be listed in any directories, never use your home number on any internet sites where it is not a known and trusted supplier and ensure it has a SSL connection (https://).

For me, texts and cold calls to my mobile originating overseas are far more annoying than the home phone ringing. That's become such a novelty we always know it's either a wrong number or sales call

The only way to stop these calls (other than by a Trucall machine or changing your number) is to stop responding to them.

When they ring, if you have CLI then you can see the number - just pick up the receiver and put it down again. If you do answer the call normally and realise it is a cold-call, again, just put the receiver down without speaking.

These companies love you to respond to them so that you talk and give them info about yourself so that they can engage you in meaningful conversation on later calls. They will also sell your number on to other similar firms as a "responsive" prospect.

By not speaking to them, you cut off their means of communication.
Asking them to take your number off their list is pointless - they'll promise to do it and then ask you for more details so that they are "sure they are removing the right name" - but they will still go on calling! I had this problem about three years ago and it has taken at least two years for my number to drop out of the system, so it is a long process.
