Advice/Info on Eon Heatwise Tarriff (very long and complex)

  • Flibertigibit I am pleased Heatwise is working well for you.

I do have a Heatwise wired in immersion heating water three times a day but most of that is wasted as we use a dishwasher we put on late in the evening and have showers in the morning. There are only two of us. It is however our only source of hot water.

I know my neighbours all have the same system and have had trouble switching from Eon but am not sure if they have managed to switch tariffs. I will find out.

I have lived in this newly built house for over 11 years and finally thanks to Malc I understand how my Homewise tariff and metering works! Thank you.

I am now a bit surprised that I am on a Homewise tariff as I have gas central heating (and have done from day 1). If it turns out that I am on an inappropriate tariff is it possible to transfer to an alternative tariff with Eon if that is likely to be cheaper? (I have read elsewhere that there are difficulties transferring from this tariff). My gas is also billed through Eon.

    Hi anpfocus

Many thanks for the kind words. They are much appreciated and I'm glad you found my comments helpful.

I must admit, I'm surprised you've had Gas Central Heating from day one. As I said in a previous post, Heatwise is specifically designed for all electric properties with storage heaters.

It's certainly possible to replace the meter with the more conventional single rate/Economy 7 type. This will give you access to a wider range of tariffs both with us and the other suppliers.

However, as Flibertigibit says, the meter will be wired directly into your immersion heater. Replacing the meter may, therefore, have implications for your water heating.

I always advise customers thinking of changing from Heatwise to a conventional meter to arrange for an independent approved electrician to check over their set up first. It may be necessary to carry out some remedial work to make sure you don't have any problems once the meter has been changed.

I'm afraid, whilst you have a Heatwise meter, the only tariffs available with us are Heatwise with Economy 7 and Heatwise single rate.

Not sure about the other suppliers. They may be able to offer alternatives but you will need to talk to them individually as these types of metering set ups are not listed on the comparison sites.

Are you on the Economy 7 or single rate version of this tariff? If you are on Economy 7 but only use a minimal amount of electricity during these times, it may be possible to make savings here.

We wouldn't need to change the meter. We would add the day and night readings together and charge all the usage on a single rate tariff.

If you do decide to change the meter, we currently charge £51.06 for the work involved.

With regard to your hot water, is there a switch or isolator on the immersion to turn it off when not required?

I'm no expert on immersions but was just thinking, if you're not using the hot water, it may benefit you to turn it off during the times it heats up automatically. You can then use the Boost button for an hours hot water when you need it.

The downside of this, though, is if you do this during peak times you'll pay a much higher rate for the electricity.

Hope this is useful anpfocus. Give me a shout if you need any more info as will be happy to help. :)

    Hi Flibertigibit,

Just wondered how much of Rate 2 electric you use between 12 - 7 am for domestic use.
Just thats theres a tarif that combines rate 1 and rate 2 together and charges the primary @ about 20p per kwh for the first 900kwh i believe and the rest @ about 10p per kwh.

This worked out cheaper in the long run for my father in law..

Also i wasn't aware of any cheap periods during the rate 1 electric as you stated above.
All of rate 1 gets charged at the same price.

    Cheers

So far, with Heatwise and storage heaters, I'm quite pleased. I have been much warmer than my neighbours who have got storage heaters, but only Economy 7 - for instance I've used the equivalent of £200 in the last 2 months, but given it was the coldest Dec on record and also that I was still learning how to use the heaters with Heatwise, I don't think that's too bad. Several people have said that Heatwise is more a "comfort" tariff than a money saving one such as Ec 7, but give me affordable comfort and warmth any day - I was paying more than that where I lived before and freezing all the time.

    Hi Flibertigibit

Glad you're a little happier with your heating set up and are keeping warm.

You're right; Heatwise is more about comfort than economy.

It is designed so the storage heaters do not cool down and the house and water should stay warm throughout the day.

Give me a shout if you, or anyone else, has any more questions/queries about Heatwise as will be happy to try and answer them. :)

  • hi malc, i have been living in my house for just over a year and a half now and the electricity bills have been what i would call 'reasonable' up until yesterday i recieved a bill for £282. 32 (for 3 months) my account was in 139.33cr so the electricity used was a total of £368.81! i am still baffled and confused how a household of 2 people who are hardly there could use so much electric. after doing some reasearch i discovered i was on heatwise i had never heard of heat wise and and still quiet frankly dont understand how it works. myself and my house mate both work different shifts and some late nights / early mornings. we have 2 storage heaters in our house 1 of which is never on.
i can understand some advantages of the package but from reading previous post, if neither of us are home when the heatwise kicks in then wat is the point?
as i said we have 2 storage heaters and 1 immersion heater. i am still in disbelive about much electricity i have meant to have used.
as myself and my house mate both work different times and are in and out of the house at different times i feel that heatwise is completely inapproitate for us. i want to change my tarrif or more realisticly leave eon all together. please can you tell me the prices for the standard tarrif compared to the heatwise tarrif and any other options that are availale to me to get away from heatwise hell! thank you

    Hi philoola,

    Welcome to the forum :hello:

Malc's post above gives all the information on general heatwise metering (post 13).

We aren’t allowed to post prices on the forum I’m afraid, but if you send you details to the email address in profile page I can give these to you by email.

There is currently only one tariff for customers with heatwise meters that we offer. So I can't offer any alternatives for your current meter set up. (I can't speak for other suppliers)

As Malc says above you would need a meter change to be able to be billed on a different tariff and Heatwise is normally wired in to the storage heaters/water so you would need to speak to an electrician.

Is the bill that you have received billed from and to actual meter readings?

Have you discussed the usage/bill with E.ON?

    Helena :)

  • Hi Philoola,

Don't panic because of one bill - even though it does seem excessively high. If it was you and the same housemate for the year and a half you said the bills were reasonable, you have to ask yourself what has changed in the last 3 months (and if you do mean the LAST 3 months it's very odd indeed as we had the exceptionally warm March, April and May when I doubt you would have used much heating, if any. The fact that the Heatwise cheap rates are when you may not be around really doesn't matter. Storage heaters don't work like gas central heating or a fire or indeed any source of "instant heat" - what they do is "top up" the heat stored in the units so that the house can remain at a reasonable temperature throughout the day and evening. People whose tariff is something like Economy 7 often find that the house gets cold towards evening because the energy stored in the unit is running low. Having said all that, I would change to gas central heating tomorrow if I could, not only because it's cheaper but because it is so flexible - with storage heaters you do need to plan ahead and adjust them accordingly.

No doubt Malc will be along soon to either put me straight or confirm what I am about to say. I understand it is VERY difficult to change to a "normal tariff" from Heatwise as all the heaters and the immersion are wired into it. For better or worse I have decided to continue with it, but it is annoying that anyone else in the country can go after better deals. On the plus side I do think it is the best for many people who have storage heaters and if I ever get stopped by salespeople trying to get me to swap, I just shrug and say "I'm on Heatwise" and they let me walk away!
  • Just to clarify - I hadn't read Helena's post before I posted mine - it must have gone on during the time I was writing mine! I'm being lazy and can't be bothered to get up and check but I have a feeling all the prices relating to Heatwise are on your bill, or alternatively I'm sure they'd give you them by phone. I know it's a hassle but it really will pay you to really understand how storage heaters and Heatwise work to make sure you get the best of both. Hope you get to the bottom of it - I know how awful it is to get a much higher bill than you were expecting and if you really do use only one storage heater it does seem excessive - or do you use other appliances to give you instant heat as well?

Your absolutely right Flibertigibit, the unit prices will be on the bill and we can give them over the phone, that’s no problem.

I think contacting E.ON and going through the bill is the best thing to do and also asking for more information on heatwise to help understand how this works.

    Thank you

    Helena :)

I'm on heatwise too and have been since I moved in 2 1/2 years ago. In winter my electric bills become a bit of a money problem (being a student and all!). I pay quarterly on receipt of bill with November and February being the dreaded arrival months for the bills. They are usually between £250-£350 per quarter which is almost as much as my rent! (In the summer its about £70-£90). There are 3 storage heaters in the flat but I only use 1 and I'm scared to put the others on as I don't think I could afford the bill if I did!

I do understand how heatwise works and I've tried cutting back and spent several weeks adjusting the input and output on my heaters and now own a 2nd duvet that spends most of its time on my sofa in the winter. The main problem I have is that I'm on the top floor with a pitched roof so the ceilings are from 3m to ~8m high.

I also believe there is no or very little insulation in the flat - the roof is pitched to show off the old beams (building used to be a mill, apparently!) the roof is ~ 5-6 inches deep, the walls are just stud walls and the outer wall is just painted bricks (again because they thought it looked nice).

Is there any suggestions for how I could improve the cost? Is it worth changing the meter from heatwise to a standard meter? Does E.On do any scheme to help with insulation costs? as that could be a solution but would be dependent on the landlord obviously and finally, is it possible to get the actual times the heatwise is on for? nobody seems to know when I phone up - the actual response I got was "well it could be anytime during those hours"....
