hacked email

my friend is going through a divorce, and she forwarded me an email, with information of an offer that her ex sent her, to which I replied.

Later on that day he sent her a text saying that on his email (forwarded to me), he had installed some new software that would indicate where the email was sent to, is this possible? She also forwarded it to her solicitor! But did not reply to him.

The problem is, he is a clever chap and their sons take their laptops to his house, when they stay there. Could he have installed something on the laptops, to capture her login information?

Please can someone advise, and if he has hacked her email what recourse would she have if any?

run freshly installed virus scanner, a keylogger could easily be installed and then excluded in existing scanners, and then just had the keystroke log emailed to him, thus getting your email login details, then see your friends reply. Hence why he not seen anything about the solicitor getting it because they hadn't replied when he looked and saw your friends reply.

Virus scan and change passwords, also change the secret answer and check no forwarding has been set up. to forward replies to all your emails to him

you will have to check for this keylogger any time the computer is out of your site and at his place. alternativly if you have a smartphone set up a new email account and use that for corespondance.

If she uses web based email, like hotmail, it is possible her ex knows what the password is and is accessing it as well as her, so he could see her sent items. What she should do for that is change her password immediately.
Run something like malwarebytes on her system, probably just to put her mind at rest that there isn't something nasty on the system itself.

  • she set up a new yahoo account when they seperated, so he shouldnt have had access to her password.
  • As "Davester" has already said - a keylogger is certainly a possibility.

I would just add that if using a Desktop PC she would be well advised to have a look around the back for a hardware keylogger.

A Full virus scan and also running a dedicated "Rootkit" detection tool (often combined with software Keyloggers in my experience) would be a very good idea.

Nobody hacked her account. Her ex just installed some software which adds remote content ("web bugs") to the email and people are still stup*d enough to automatically load remote content or click on any link in an email.

Your friend should have forwarded the email as plain text, which removes all web bugs and your friend and her solicitor shouldn't have clicked on any link in it.

    Simples ;)

Well a keylogger records the keys you press and usually the program or website you are using when you type, so he could have your username and password for hotmail and then just type it into his own computer and access all your emails and see whatever you can see in your account.

As for breaking the law , probably but not sure which law and you have to prove it was him rather than someone else passed on the info, like your best friend told him.

He could have done it before you split up, not many people just wake up and say its over without some issues before hand, so he could have just set up fowarding to all mails you recieve to be sent to him, and not know your password cause you left it logged in once (called to deal with your kids, or phone). Hence why he said your friend got a forward and not mention the solicitor. Most people reply and keep the original message so he would see it was forwarded that way.

  • ok, but its not likely there will be a software program that will track forwarded email as his text suggested?

Its more than likely he installed something on the laptop?

No hes just made that up. Why would he admit how he did it so its easy for you to just fix?

In hotmail you want to change password, after you have checked that your setting have no forward incoming emails set up and then change your secret answer, check he not have changed your alternative email address which will send him a copy of the new password and then change the password itself.

But do the above after you have virus scanned with a newly installed virus scanner incase he has fiddled the virus scanner already installed to ignore the keylogger.
