How much for a decent website

Hi Ive been to a wedsite design company for a professional looking website for our company.
I was a bit shocked at the price, I was quoted £2000 + vat for a homepage and then 5 additional pages.
Does this sound about right or is it overpriced?
Ive tried to contact a few companies but they won't give me a rough estimate just a full quote after a mornings meeting and then take a couple of days to prepare the quote and I haven't got the time to keep going out to meetings etc as Im rushed off my feet as it is!!

What exactly are you looking for in a website?
Basics;
A basic website with 3-5 pages usually costs between £200 - £400 without a content management system (CMS). CMS allows you to update, edit templates,wordings,images anytime.
More;
If you want CMS implemented it will usually cost around £600, some companies charge £800.
Extra;
I think if you wanted say a search facility to allow people to search on your site it will cost around £2000.

If they are taking a whole morning to just get the details off you to quote, and 2 whole days to compile the quote that is labour you are paying for ... not just for your product but for all those customers who don't accept the quote
I suggest you keep shopping around, perhaps ready armed with a written specification of what exactly you want."Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -
It depends entirely on what sort of functionality your website requires. If it's purely "brochureware" (i.e. just text and images for people to look at), then that's far too expensive.
If however you want to display items that you currently have in stock with a purchase process, payment handling, login areas or anything that requires extensive database work it will boost the price significantly.Mortgage | £145,000Unsecured Debt | [strike]£7,000[/strike] £0 Lodgers | |0 -
What others have said: there's a big difference between a static site and one with, say, multi-lingual support etc., so it's a bit like asking "How much should I pay for a new car?".
You should be comfortable with the web designers, in terms of their portfolio and support. There are far too many unscrupulous companies around, alas, but good companies will not be cheap.Debbie0 -

Sorry i didn't really post much information. The website is basically so if people look us up then they will find out who we are and what we do there is nothing complicated about the site, no e-commerce, this is also without the facility to change anything i would have to go back to them etc
The only thing that i could see where costs were higher than normal is that I said i want a slick website not a tacky homemade cheap looking one.
Thank0 -
In that case, if it's literally going to be pretty flat webpages, you should be looking at more like £200.
Have they perhaps proposed a swanky Flash site instead of html?Mortgage | £145,000Unsecured Debt | [strike]£7,000[/strike] £0 Lodgers | |0 -
I suppose you could try to cut costs by planning the design yourself and then presenting this as a 'template' format to follow. That means the designer doesn't have to work on two / three designs, till you are happy with the finished outcome.
I work on template packages and design within them, using as much of the customers ideas as poss, and presenting here and there as required.
Is SEO included in the price? This will also be a factor if you want to be found on google and other search engines. Any slideshows, flash, anything like this?
I do this for a living and offer as much advice to customers as possible before a quote is even offered.
Some home made websites are really cool too.
PM me if you want any more info / tips etc

Or integrate a far more powerful customised and integrated free google search in about 15-30 minutes.
SEO... most developers don't have a clue and just say they've done "SEO" when in reality they've just customised a few title tags.
Most sites are sandboxed for several months regardless. (to stop new sites hosting spam only content)0 -
That does sound expensive, but it may depend on such things as logos, artwork etc. One of my clients paid several hundred pounds for a photographer/food stylist...Debbie0
