I am aware of the departure tax from Cancun. How much is this & how can you pay it? Dollars? Cash or Card? If in Dollars how easy & cost effective is it to obtain Dollars in Mexico. What is the main used Currency & is this easily obtained from ATM's (Nationwide Card). We are staying at the Riu Playacar & travel out on 24/5.

i went about 8 years ago and i think it was $20 each then and could only be payed in dollar notes, back then dollars was the main currency but may have changed now.they were easy to get hold of from banks and places that change money.
one thing i would say allow plenty of time at airport to get it payed i spent about 1.5hrs waiting in a que to pay it before being able to get through to departures.
have a serach for the mexican embassy they should be able to give more info.0 -
Hi
When we were there last year I am pretty sure the departure tax was about $53 USD. You pay it when you are in the queue to check in. We took dollars with us for this purpose. The Thomsons Rep will tell you exactly how much it is at the Welcome meeting so you can then put it away so you don't spend it. (Like I did the first time we went ) Also it can ONLY be paid in cash.
The main currency is Mexican Peso's and it is quite easy to obtain them from the ATM's. Although I would suggest you let Nationwide know that you are going to be in Mexico, because, although it tells you on their website that you don't have to, both times I have been my card was blocked. Also, if you pay in dollars they will give you change in Peso's anyway, so its just easier to have one currency.
Have a fabulous time.0 -
We took dollars. Get $1 bills to leave for the staff that make the beds or fill the minibar. Everywhere accepts dollars.0

Take $US.
If you're buying souvenirs ask for the change in $ too (some places are purely priced in $US) and you'll get $US.
Departure tax to come back to the US... $0!0 -

it has changed a bit since i went then?
you had to que up to pay the tax and then move to the check in and que again with the proof of departure tax payment it took for ever,is that $53 per person?
as for the peso's the shops/bars etc preferred $us when i went they would try to give change in peso but if you asked for change in $us 99% of time they gave it to you.0 -

Yes it was $53 per person
. Paying it was simple, there was a desk actually in the check-in queue so you pay while you are waiting to move forward.
The first time we went we took Dollars, but then my other half worked out that you got a slightly better exchange rate if you paid in Peso's. One of the staff also told us that they prefer tips in Peso's.0 -
Returned from Cancun nearly 3 weeks ago.
The tax is now $55 per person. Hand over your money (cash only) at a desk in the check-in queue, and the official will stamp your paperwork which you then show to the check-in person.
My welcome paperwork also said that I could pay 640 pesos or £36, but as I had taken lots of $$$ I paid in $.

So I can draw Peso's via ATM using Nationwide Debit Card to minimise charges & then pay Dep tax in Pesos-How much in Pesos is it? & Approx how many Pesos to the £? It's just there are 5 of us & I want to ensure there is enough in my Nationwide Account.
Are there any ATM's to avoid re extra charges? Have heard there is a Wallmart (staying in Playe Del Carmen. Is this true?0
