Why cant the banks get together and agree to have 1 card reader designed etc for anyone who has an account, ive got 2 at the minute and possibly a third on its way. Has anyone tried to use a card reader with a card from another bank and did it work alright ?

Do they not look the same to you other than the logo? If you have two already, why have you not tried using one with Bank A logo for a Bank B transaction yourself? You would have found they would work perfectly well.0

They def dont work, i have 2 cards that look very similar and wondered why my internet banking was on the verge of blocking me when i looked at the card and realised i was using the wrong card lol, i think a universal one would be a good idea but not sure if that would make things less secure.0 -

Nationwide say:Can I use a Card Reader from another Bank or Building Society? You can use any Nationwide Card Reader, or one from any other UK Bank or Building Society.0 -
Yes they are interchangeable.
They all work to the same set of standards.
Here are mine.
The Natwest, Nationwide and Tesco card readers are the same just different branding.
Any of my cards(the correct card for the account) work in any of the readers.0 -
Shouldn't the first question really be: why are banks forcing their customers to jump through yet more hoops? Card readers are a pain in the bum, and are not for my "protection". They are another imposition on us to safeguard the banks. I've been online banking now for over ten years and found inputting personal data sufficient security. Now I've to do this AND fiddle with a separate gizmo. Might be simpler to go to the bank!0

At the end of the day, it is us, the customer, who has the choice.
If we would like to have the additional perceived security, then there are plenty of banks that insist on us using card readers.
If we are happy with the existing security, and don't want the hassle of card readers, then we can use a bank that doesn't have card readers. Remember that online banking fraud is rare, provided that you are not careless with your login details. And, in the highly unlikely event of something actually happening, your bank will refund you anyway.0 -

HSBC issue business customers with little number generators that don't require a card, so they're much easier to carry around - the main problem with the current breed of machines is the size, which isn't really pocket-friendly0

Smaller ones will be on their way at some stage ... http://www.gemalto.com/products/ezio_thin_reader/
I would be happy with a 4mm thick one! But they will no doubt get thinner than that at some stage.0
