I could not get through the 0800 number so called the Welling club in SE London/Kent, they said that I still would have to pay a membership fee first, that was £84 on joining, and then I would be able to do the free month and then the monthly payments would kick in. No way I am going to fork out £84 in advance for something that is supposedly a 'free trial!

Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).

I'm pretty sure that Curves is a franchise, so it might be that they won't all participate in this.

  • Curves is a 30 minute workout gym. Not just one you can turn up to whenever. The man I spoke to said that the programme they offer is a 3 times a week 30 min workout to combat problem areas. They charge £30 per mnth for this. Personally I prefer a gym I can just turn up to as I please. Luckily I now have a cross trainer and several exercise dvds at home so dont have a Gym membership to pay.

Caterina - I've just got back from my second session of my free 30 day free trial. I'm not paying anything for it, so they shouldn't have asked you for a joining fee. If they had tried that with me I would have found a head office number to complain too, as that definitely isn't in the spirit of 30 days free!!

Princesspoppypop - my local Curves specifically told me I can turn up whenever I want (as long as I am out by the time they close), and they also said that while they recommend 3 sessions a week, they're happy for me just to turn up when I can get there. I'm not sure how happy they'd be if I tried to do something other than the 30-minute circuit workout, as that would mess up everyone else too :)
Maybe they're being more flexible as they've only been open a couple of months and are still trying to build up their membership....

I'd be a bit annoyed if I could only turn up at certain times. Seeing that they're advertising this in a baby magazine, so targetting new mums, so they better realise finding 30 spare minutes is a luxury for some of us, let alone 30 minutes at a certain time they decide.

As I said, I'll be taking this up in a couple of weeks and they better stick to their T&Cs (if not, I'm pretty good at complaining!)

And Caterina, I'm pretty sure the person who told you you have to pay was talking rubbish. A free trial is a free trial. I'd try the 0800 number again - good luck! :)
  • Hi Dormouse - they dont give you a specified time for your workout but I was told its 3 workouts a week for 30 mins as stated on their website.

You cant just turn up and do your own thing, like at most gyms , cos it works as a 30 minute circuit.

The man I spoke to said that if I wanted to pop down, I could trial a session out. He said they offer a weigh in and dietary advice as well as the workouts.

I just called the Twickenham branch to make an appointment for the free trial... The lady asked what magazine it was for So I told her it was Prima Baby & Pregnancy one. She asked me to bring a copy of the magazine as she had not heard of the advert being in that mag so i'm off to find myself a copy.
Made the appointment for this Thursday! She said on the day she would do some health assesments and I would also have a go on the machines!
Eek! Im very nervous as iv never been to a gym before! Hope it all goes well.

  • I am going along on Wednesday to take up the free trial...... i go the coupon off someone off Freecycle ( so I didnt even have the buy the magazine).

I was wondering, if I join this one free for a month, do you think I could then use the February one from Essential magazine, for the next month (even if it is at another site (I live slap bang in the middle of 2 - that seem to be unrelated).

Think I am looking forward to it..... but hey if i hate it, it has cost me nothing!
