Why are Wii waiting?
SHUT-UP shop . . . the Ozone store on Glodwick Road which has left hundreds of Christmas shoppers disappointed
AN Oldham firm has left hundreds of youngsters disappointed after failing to deliver this year’s must-have Christmas present.
Ozone Electronics, in Glodwick Road, Glodwick, was still taking orders for the Nintendo Wii up until last week.
But customers who had paid over £220 for the games console started to panic when their orders didn’t arrive by a December 17 deadline.
The company told customers deliveries had been halted.
Ozone Electronics has been advertising the Nintendo Wii on various websites.
Hundreds of people could be left empty handed after the company closed its doors and switched the telephone to a recorded message.
Yesterday officers from Oldham Trading Standards went to the premises to investigate after receiving more than 60 complaints.
The firm first started advertising the Nintendo Wii for sale last month. Demand was high and many big stores had sold out, so customers quickly ordered a console from Ozone.
But demand outstripped supply and it is unclear whether any of its customers actually received one.
One woman, who contacted the Oldham Chronicle, said that up until last week the company had been trying to buy the Wii on internet auction site ebay — even though it was supposed to be selling them.
On Monday, a message went up on the company’s website saying that Streamline Services — which provides businesses with the facilities to accept credit and debit card payments — was responsible for the delay in deliveries.
It claimed Streamline had withdrawn its services and suspended payments to the company’s bank account.
Yesterday this message was removed and the website closed down. A spokesman for Streamline confirmed Ozone was being investigated.
Some disgruntled customers told their stories on an internet shopping chat room. One man cancelled his order on November 16 and even received an e-mail confirming this. But on December 16 the money went out of his account.
Another customer said: “They’ve taken almost £300 from my account and I can’t make a claim against the money until January 5. I’m not looking forward to explaining this to my wife and children.”
Tony Allen, head of Oldham Trading Standards, said: “We are now advising consumers who have paid with a credit or debit card to contact their card provider or bank and tell them what has happened.
“It seems unlikely that orders will be fulfilled at all. We think the company has failed. We have been in contact with the owner and he is saying the bank has foreclosed and he can’t fulfil his orders.
“The bank foreclosed to protect the interests of consumers.”0 -
