Well hopefully I'll be able to try it out this week as my local butcher has just re-opened so I'll be sending son in to see what range of cheap meats he has and hopefully pick up a nice cheap ham hock for tea"An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will"

Hi,
Does anyone know why some sauces (esp tomato ones) get stuck and burnt on the side of the slow cooker? I have found this happens a few times when I leave it on low for 8-9 hours. Should I be watering sauces down or what?
Thanks, Sarah.Yesterday is today's memories, tomorrow is today's dreams0 -
Mine does this too. I think it is because it is one for a bit too long.
I have invested (£4.50ish from Wilkos) in a plug timer. I am going to set the timer to come on about 11am-noon to be ready for 6pm.

Hi all
I read this thread and ran into garage hoping our slow cooker was still there and it was i haven't used it for years, anyway it's brill. I made a chicken meal in it and added pasta in the last half hour of cooking, it worked out really well as i have 3-4 to feed at 5pm then another 2 come in between 6-6.30, pasta was fine.
On sat I cooked lentil and tomatoe casserole again throwing in pasta in last half hour and again for supper last night i made a tomato sauce and in last half an hour i added spagetti even that worked and in last 5 mins i added cheese, lovely.
Today i have put in remains of roast beef from yesterday (which was chewy)and gravy, onions, can of beer and some dried rosemary, at teatime im going to put dumplings on top and serve it all with left over veg. Lovely, what i really like about cooking like this is that the sprogs and himself can get it when they want, i'm not doing 2 sittings it just cooks itself. Brilliant thread0 -
Well done for rediscovering your slow cooker. I've also added things during the last hour, for example if you want to add frozen veg, just throw it in towards the end of the cooking time and it will be fine. I quite often add pasta to mine as on a couple of nights a week my son and husband play football at different times on the same night and it saves me being in the kitchen from 4pm till he gets home at 8.15pm! I also made a veg curry and added rice to it, came out really well. The rice soaked up all the excess juice so it was really tasty.“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0

Well my 5l Prima arrived today and it looks VAST - can't wait to get started! I'm in work til 2pm tomorrow though and someone pointed out to me that it wasn't such a good idea to leave it on for the first time when I'm out of the house in case it is faulty. My plan is to put some manky veg through the finest thing on the v-slicer when I get in tomorrow and make some soup -hopefully it will be cooked before bedtime. Does this sound like a good plan?0

I've just stuck a chicken in my slow-cooker on a bed of sliced onions and garlic, with a glass or so of white wine. Instead of browning it off in a pan first I mixed some coarse sea salt, pepper and paprika in some olive oil and rubbed that all over instead.
Now I need some advice from all you slow-cooker pro's out there... I've got a bag of par-boiled veg in the freezer (cauli, broccoli and carrots) that I want to serve with dinner and wondered if I can just pop them in the slow-cooker around the chicken at some point during cooking. How long would they need to cook through and should I defrost them first so they don't lower the temp too much in the slow-cooker?
Just had another thought too ... could I wrap some baking spuds in foil and add them too, and if so, should I add them now or later? ... intending meal to be ready around 5pm.
Cheers"An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will"

Not sure about the spuds but as it's chicken you're cooking, I wouldnt put frozen veg in myself. If you defrost them then it should be ok to put them in. I am NO expert though LOL“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0
