Could anyone recommend a good slow cooker with a low wattage. I've seen a few but they all seem to be over 300 watts. I always thought slow cookers where very cheap to run so this seems a little high. Thanks in advance. :o

Right i haven't got one of these slow cooker thingies so a couple of questions for you professionals*

    1) Do you worry about leaving it on when you are going to work etc.
I work full ime so i leave my house at 8.30 am and do not get home until 6pm.
Nope, I leave mine on between 8am - 6pm and it doesn't bother me, it uses the same power as leaving a light bulb on, I do make sure that I don't leave anything touching it (paper or other flamable stuff) though as it can get quite hot.
    2) My o/h is a fussy bleeder and will not eat veggies of any sort apart from processed peas, i have got him to eat a few thing but he wont budge with the veg, so is it worth buying one ?
Mine won't eat them when they have been done in the slow cooker, says they taste funny and I still use it at least once a week for doing chilli, joints of meat without veg in and my new finds, meatballs, sausage, bacon and cabbage bake (you don't notice the cabbage).

You might find this works the opposite way for you, he might like the veggies as they get meat juices soaked into them so they taste a bit more meaty.

    3) can you cook other stuff like rice and thing in them or is it just casseroles ?
I haven't tried rice yet but next time I do a chilli I'm going to try putting rice in a lidded bowl that will fit inside the cooker (with the lid on), apparently the liquid in the chilli will steam the rice. This works with potatoes too so if you do a casserole or goulash or something you can put the potatoes in a dish (same as the rice) and they will be cooked so you can either serve them or mash em.

I love my slow cooker, and this thread, because of all the new recipes on here I use it at least once a week. I wouldn't be without it. I is especially good for if you want to go out straight from work, before I would buy something processed that I could shove in the oven, now I have a lovely meal just waiting to be dished up.
When life hands you a lemon, make sure you ask for tequilla and salt ;)

    Another great success!!!! :D

What makes it even better is that I used a cheap cut of stewing beef instead of the usual braising steak I'd normally buy for this dish and you couldn't tell the difference after being in the slow cooker!!! It flaked easily with a fork and melted in the mouth mmmMMMMmmmm ;)

Bought 2 pork hocks yesterday..£2.99 both both from kwik Save.

Never cooked hocks! I would like to put them in the slow cooker in the morning, they are very meaty, with a bone, but have a big layer of fat on the outside. you know the sort of crackling if roasted.

Do I take off the fat before cooking? I thought of throwing in some veggies, with apple juice, what do you all think??

Wey-heeeeyyyy. DS1 ate all his meatballs and said they were lovely, even though the onion was noticeable if he'd have bothered to look. DS2 was too tired to eat much, but everyone else liked them too - served with spaghetti and garlic bread (home made, of course)

I did ham hocks this week that I got in local market for £1.40 each. I cut the fat off and cooked it overnight with boiling water- then removed meat in morning - falling off bone! Then added dried peas (soaked earlier) carrots, onions and potato - hubby reckoned it tasted like he remembered as a boy! I cut ham into slices and swore blind it was gammon and had it with veg, yorkies and roast potatoes.

    Ham hocks, yum!!

I bought one the other week at a small shop in town that makes their own bacon and gammon. It cost me £2.50 and I stretched it to last 3 meals.

It should cook up nicely in apple juice (or cider) and a selection of root veggies and is something I'd certainly try. It also goes very well with sauerkraut :)
