"Unable to Update" - Vista - Any help gratefully received!

Options
About a month ago I realised that my laptop (Dell Inspiron) wasn't updating properly - I had a box pop up saying it was uanble to search for updates. I've not been able to afford to have anyone come and look at it (just managed to get a job after being made redundant last year!) but I have had a look online, and it seems a number of people have had similar experiences - however, I've tried some of the solutions they're suggested and nothing's worked!

My laptop hasn't been update since May now, and while I have AVG free and add-ons like AdAware, I'd quite like to make sure it was all up-to-date.

If anyone has any suggestions I would be really, really grateful. Thanks!

Stupid question first, I assume your internet connection is working ok?

Are you connected directly to your internet modem, or does it go through a router?

Are you sure your version of Windows is 100% legitimate?

    Cheers

I had the same problem on an HP and no matter what I did I could not upgrade so I did a restore to before the last known update worked and let it redo all updates and everything worked fine. You don't say how long agao this started but I believe there was an issue a few months back and the only resolve was to do this.

Make sure the time and date are right. I've seen that cause problems more than a few times.

Thank you all for your replies!

I can connect and go online through my router fine - I don't seem to be blocked from anything and I can still do everything, it just won't update.

I have thought of going to the last known update but I'm not sure of how to do this myself (so may bribe techi friend of mine with food to help me *lol*) The last yupdate was around April so it woulds like this might be the case!

I will check the date/time thoguh adn then try Tronator's suggestion. thansk again! :-D
