Yes debt counsellors are normally good and will take a lot of the pressures off you. Look at the links you've been given. Act on the advice of the counsellors and I'm sure things will seem a whole lot pressured. You're trying to improve your life. Good luck to you I'm sure you'll make it

Don't give up!!! You are both working hard to make things better. You just need a little help to get straight.

"There are some things that the bailiffs are not allowed to take at all, such as goods that are rented or hired. The regulations also say that the following items are exempt and cannot be taken:
    • “such tools, books, vehicles and other items of equipment as are necessary for use personally in employment, business or vocation”;"
You are willing to pay back, but at a value that you can afford. OK they want their money, but you cannot give them what you do not have.

This is my problem!! i want to pay off this debt, i want to be free from them, but they keep asking for repaymetns that i cannot afford. to pay the repayments mean i pay them and not pay rent or feed my kids. i cannot win with them, i paid £25 a week for a couple of weeks but i just cannot do it anymore, i will b thrown out of my house.

i am just at a loss as to how to get them to accept a realistic payment.

hiya can you not look into sellin some of your possessions on ebay maybe to raise a little more cash
maybe do some mystery shopping to help top your monthly income up or maybe your partner can
i hope you get sorted and hope this helps :)http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/forumdisplay.php?f=145 have a look here if you can top your monthly payments up
always smile no matter how broken you are.
  • You need to write down how much is coming in and how much you are spending on all your household expenses etc (do you have any other debts/arrears at all?). This is called an SOA (Statement of affairs) You will need this in order to prove that you cannot afford to pay the €25 per week. That is what we pay on our normal council tax and we are not students!! So it is totally unreasonable to expect you to pay that much. Write down as much details as you can, post it here if you like and plenty of people will try and help. Take your SOA with you and go see the citizens advice bureau. ASAP. Good luck and keep posting!
:D Skint but happy with my lovely family :D

    Hi
My situation is that i am currently a full time student. i have 4 children and my husband is also a full time student - although he is not entitled to any finance as he is not on higher education but further education (he starts his degree in september). I work part time and earn 500-600 a month.

i currently owe about 2000 in council tax. this is several different accounts added together (we have been struggling for a while now). my current year is paid. this has now been passed to equita!!

in the last three months i have paid about £500 off the debt, but i am now facing possible eviction, as equita would only accept £25 a week and so i have not been paying al of my rent, to try and cover this amount.

We are getting everything we are entitled to, but i can only afford abou £15 a week to pay this off.

I have been readingn through the boards and i want to try and get in tuch with my councillor to see if they can get the council to take the debt back at a rate i can afford. I cant sleep i cant eat, and i am terrified i am going to loose either my home, or everything in it.

How do i go about asking for this help. how do i find out my local counciller or is it MP?

i would really appreciate any help. i am really trying to get out of this mess, but the money they are asking for is just too much!!

It is important to ensure that you put something in WRITING. I would suggest something along the following lines and your letter should be sent by email. I have sent you a PM with the name of a person who you should address your email.

    Dear Sirs.

    Reference Number:

I am writing with reference to the above account.

As you will know from our records we made an agreement with your company to make payments of £25 per week in relation to the above Liability Orders and to date we have managed with great difficulty to pay £500 towards these debts.

Unfortunately, the effect that these high payments has had on us is that we are now facing eviction because we cannot afford to pay arrears of rent and pay £25 per week to your company.

Our circumstances are that both my husband and I are full time students and we have 4 young children one of whom suffers from epilepsy. I also work part time and receive approx £500 per month for this.

The items of furniture that we own are worth very little and we do not have any savings or means of borrowing money to pay the debts to your company.

The vehicle that I have the use of is vital to my work placement as a social worker and for my part time work as a Care Officer in a children's home. In addition it is vital for my child with epilepsy as unfortunately he has seizures and when these happen he requires immediate hospital car.

We are not refusing to pay our account but the purpose of this letter is to seek your agreement to reducing the payments down to £15 per week instead of £25 per week.

As you will be aware, a bailiff has never gained entry into our home and neither has a levy been made on any goods of ours, for this reason could you please confirm what charges have been applied to each of the above accounts.

    Yours sincerely

I am just chiming in to say looks like there is a mix up here about councillor and counsellor.

Councillors are elected representatives who sit in various levels of local government.

    Counsellors are therapist type people.

And a DEBT COUNSELLOR is the person the forum are generally thinking you ought to speak to.

Free and impartial debt counsellors can be found at the CAB, National Debtline and the CCCS, although I'm not sure the latter take on council tax debts the first one definately does.
