I'm Having A Problem With My Fan In My Laptop

For some strange reason, even when my laptop isn't hot, the fan goes into overdrive and it sounds as though it is preparing for takeoff. When this happens, it sometimes freezes my laptop and I have to switch it off by the 'Power' button and then switch it back on again.
Does anyone have any ideas what the problem might be and how I can resolve it?
Thank you.

It is a scientific fact that your body will not absorb calories if you take it from another person's plate.

Chocolate is the answer and I don't give a damn what

theres some thermal paste between the processor and the heat sink/fan , if this has dried out it can make it run the fan all the time
download speedfan and see what it says

I've downloaded that, but I can't understand the information.
I've also seem to have downloaded a file called initdebug to my desktop which I can't get rid off. *rolleyes*

ive also downloaded the programme
its recognised my dual core
on the readings tab, it says core 0 is at 70C and core 1 at 72C
Are these the temperatures...they seem really high
On the charts tab, it lets me see my temeratures over a period of time, hitting 78C at some places. It wont let me see my fan speeds or voltage though.
Is there anyone that can help me decipher this information and if i have to do anything
thanks0 -

Your CPU is overheating. The fan is running full whack because the motherboard is telling it to due to the CPU temperature. The freezing is because it is too hot. 70C is about the maximum silicon can take before it starts failing.
Good news is its not serious and is a common problem with domestically used laptops around 18 months old or more.
WHAT THE FAULT IS:
The heatsink is full of fluff. The heatsink is what cools the CPU. Every single laptop I've ever gone to with your fault that someone uses at home has been the same - the heatsink or the gap between the heatsink and the fan is blocked solid with fluff. The air from the fan can't flow over the heatsink to cool it so the laptop either goes into "limp home" or freezes and crashes. Usually they're so blocked that the fluff comes out in one lump, resembling felt underlay.
Before someone suggests it, when they get to this point trying to blow it out with compressed air is a futile gesture and at best still leaves lumps of the stuff which can jam the fan. If you're not up to dismantling your laptop, a shop should charge no more than an hours labour to sort this.
What model of laptop is it? Some, like Dells, are easy to get access to and within the abilities of anyone who can use a screwdriver.0 -
hoover out heatsink first they get filled with dirt and dust first then fans go wilder and cpus usually operate upto 90C as a rule
if you want to check out intel chips spec look here and put on you processor model no. http://ark.intel.com/0 -
Hi, the laptop is a fujitsu siemens amilo pi 2515
Just taken the back off the laptop and located the fan. given it a good hoover etc. couldnt see a way of removing it, so left it as it was.
done another check
core 0 now at 60C core 1 at 58C so a slight improvement, but i was hoping for more0 -
I have a serious overheating problem that I am temporarily solving with the use of a laptop cooler. Despite our best efforts we cannot get near the fan to clean it out. I have a Toshiba Satellite A10-11P. Can anyone offer any hints as to how to get to the fan in this model? My husband is usually pretty good at this and has cleaned loads of PC fans, but this one has him stumped.

have a satellite A60 and the whole base of the laptop needs to come apart (which includes taking out the hard drive and optical drive). Then the heatsink and fan need to be unscrewed from the chassis - not sure if the A10 would be a similar design. Also doing this will probably mean some wires will need to be unplugged from the motherboard to allow room for access - such as the fan power cable.
The HDD ribbon was taped to the chassis so this unsticking this allowed more room, and also didn't need to disconnect it.Don't try to teach a pig to sing - it wastes your time and annoys the pig0 -
