Slow Cooker - The Recipe Collection

  • I was looking at the instruction book for the Morphy Richards last night (online in pdf file) and they actually addressed this problem so I'll quote what they said:

Authentic stoneware is fired at high temperatures therefore the crock pot may have minor surface blemishes, the glass lid may rock slightly due to these imperfections. Low heat cooking does not produce steam so there will be little heat loss.

The lid is not a sealed fit. Don't remove unnecessarily as the built up heat will escape. Each time you remove the lid allow 10 mins extra cooking time.

I hope that answers your questions :) I can't comment directly on the product itself as I'm still waiting for mine to be delivered, hopefully in the next few days :D

Thanks for that, makes sense! Got to get down to Tesco now and get a bacon joint to slow cook! One of my favourites!

Anyone here ever tried Nigella's ham in coke recipe?

Never tried it myself but she raves about it so it must be worth a go ;)

Here's the recipe: (for regular cooking)

    2kg mild-cure gammon
    1 onion, peeled and halved
2 litre bottle Coca-Cola (not Diet Coke!)

    Glaze:
    handful of cloves
    heaped tbsp black treacle
    2 tsp English mustard powder
    2 tbs demerara sugar

Mild-cure gammon isn't usually very salty so no need for a pre-boil unless you think it needs it. Place gammon in pot with onion and coke, bring to boil then simmer for around an hour per kilo. When cooked, remove ham from liquid (keep liquid to make a lovely black bean soup!) and remove skin, leaving a thin layer of fat. Score fat into diamond shapes and push a clove into each diamond. Spread treacle over surface and pat on the dry mustard powder. Cook in hot oven - 240C/gas mark 9 - for approx 10 mins until glaze is burnished and bubbly!

I can't see any reason why the ham can't be cooked in the slow-cooker over a longer period of time, and the final glazing stage can always be skipped for those not fussy over presentation.

So who's going to try it out first then? :D

    Yoghurt recipe

Times are given for the Tower Slo-cookers on low (where available) and are for the Auto at 105W, the Family De-luxe at 80 w and Compact at 50w

Auto - approx 45 mins plus 2 hrs standing
    Family-de-Luxe 40 mins plus 2 hrs
Compact 70 mins plus 2 hrs

Let us all know how you get on :)

Hmmmm. i don't think it's possible to make yogurt in my slow cooker, as it's gets too hot. I took the temp whilst cooking my regular meals and it reaches way to high for yogurt, even on low. Back to flask and jam jars on the radiator! But thanks, anyway!
  • Well - you lot have inspired me, I went and bought a 6.5 litre Morphy Richards Slow Cooker from Argos yesterday (£25.25) and currently have a Boeuf Bourginion bubbling away in it.

I have cut and pasted a lot of your recipes and tips into Word and am looking forward to trying them out. I'll get back to you re the BB when we have eaten it!

Hello Stella, glad you've joined the mad masses of "crockers" :)

Let us know how you get on with the beef dish. I'm intending to make it next week - was going to be today but have just had the most succulent pork chops in it tonight.

My neighbour came round this afternoon. She was looking longingly at mine, esp. when I told her of all the recipes I've done in it recently. She loves her stews and fancies the brekkie too. Someone else off for one soon, methinks.

I was just racked with guilt over ordering a new slow cooker as my old one did not heat up properly - could I have made do a bit longer?

Hubby just looked at what had been cooking overnight in old cooker and - totally unprompted said " it is a good job you ordered a new one - that one does not seem to be heating up at all"

Bless - sometimes they do say the right thing! :):):)
