Slow Cooker - The Recipe Collection

you have all inspired me to invest in a larger slow cooker as my old one was only big enough for 2 and we are now 3. (DH agreed on the basis that he could take the small one to his weekday lodgings.) BUT the new one is massive, great for joints or bulk cooking but I quite fancy the porridge overnight idea and maybe some puddings. Can I put a small casserole dish inside the crockpot if I want to do a small quantity? If I can then would I need to put water around it to sort of simmer it (don't really want to be woken in the night by my new slow cooker exploding!)0

Elona - I've only had a quick look around, but the cheapest I can see so far, for a biggie, is at Tesco.com. They do a 6.5 L one for £29.99 plus free p&p . It's only £1 more than the 3.5 L one. I ran the idea past Mr TM and he was fine about it - but then he does like LOTS of food:D (Not that I need his permission to buy one anyway, you understand)
Stressbunny - do you have a microwave? I do my porridge every morning in one in 3 mins for one large bowlful, then I add loads of sultanas and give it another zap for 30 secs or so to soften them (S'pose I could add them at beginning - it's just a habit I've got into.) As for porridge in the slow cooker, I thought about it then decided it was far simpler and cleaner to stick to what I've been doing.:) Even if you did 2 adult portions, would only take 5 mins or so (depending on your microwave output)0 -
Ticklemouse yes I do have a microwave.. think I am being a bit lazy with visions of a pot full of porridge we can all dip into at different times with zero effort from myself0

i wouldnt use it for porridge because we all like it different:
mine - made with water
son no.1 - runny and milky
son no. 2 - made with milk but with the consistency of nearly dry concrete
daughter - not at all
...and because of the cleaning afterwards;)Member no.1 of the 'I'm not in a clique' group :rotfl:

Just had another look at prices - Amazon still have 6.5 ltr ones for around £25. Have a poke around the earlier posts and click on some of the links. I've decided to wait until the next set of sales - I really don't NEED one just yet, just WANT one. (OMG, I really am a full blown MSEer now:D )
LOL at Ssaver and kids. Mine are like that too. DS2 just eats mine, but DS1 decided he didn't like the milk, when he saw me pouring it into the bowl. So, when I serve it up, I tell him I've taken the milk out of his porridge, DS2 has all the milk. Cos there's no runny milk he believes me and eats it. Bless 'em eh?

My kids have quite a vocabulary of their own terms for things (they are fine in the outside world - honest) for some reason, so son 1's porridge is slooby, and no. 2's porridge is bumpy. And i cook it in the roundabeep.
Im suffering withdrawal symptoms, havent used the slow cooker for 2 days now! Thinking about doing the gammon joint in it for sunday. Any thoughts on that one?Member no.1 of the 'I'm not in a clique' group :rotfl:

Apologies if this has been mentioned elsewhere on this thread but rice pudding in the SC is absolutely yummy and the quickest and easiest thing in the world. Just put in your pudding rice, sugar to taste, and milk and leave for around 3 hours on the higher setting (mine is a very old Kenwood with just two settings).
Just wait for it to turn a slightly golden colour and enjoy!0 -
mmm got to do that for afters tomorrow! Shame its only me who likes it!!!
Anyone got a recipe for macaroni pudding?Member no.1 of the 'I'm not in a clique' group :rotfl:

Did gammon 2 weeks ago. It was on offer at Kwik Save (£2.99 I think) for a large piece.
Boiled it up in the pan-to reduce the saltiness- disregared that water. Boiled it up again in water with a glass of pure orange juice, and loads of black pepper, bay leaf etc. Bunged it all in the slow cooker, the juice came about 1/4 up the meat.
It was melt in the mouth ham when it came out, served as Sunday dinner. used the remaining meat for everyones butties the next day, and in the evening used it up with a rissotto.
I froze the cooking juices, and will make pea and ham soup....minus the ham...sometime soon!:j0 -
I've just found my 20 yr old Slow cooker cook book:D (Damn, it was cold in that attic!)
You could try cooking your ham in apple juice too. It says about pre-boiling it, but the other night I did as MATH suggested and just put it in, with a couple of inches of liquid and left it on low overnight - lovely.
I did a tapioca pud in mine tonight. And having looked thru my cook book, I'm tempted by the apricot conserve (I have a large bag of dried apricots to eat) and also the yoghurt! My kids live off yogs but I'm worried about the amount of sugar they consume in them - time to wean onto lower sugar I think, especially if they 'help' make them.
On the cards over the next few days - pork steaks in some sort of sauce and maybe a beef stroganoff on Sunday.
What I still need, is cheap gym membership, never mind more recipes.;)0
