It was such a fun evening and so easy to do.

Weezl we can all carry on the thread whilst you are having fun with Kester. You could give us things you want specifically sorted out/tested or just let us chat about issues etc till you are up to thinking again.

I think you know me well enough by now to be allowed to say I'm extreme even without the speech marks susan! Also geeky and a few other choice adjectives
. I knew where you were coming from.
Guys I'm at a bit of a fork in the road and would appreciate a couple of nudges to get me off in the right direction.
As you know I made a clear decision to go for the most 'normal' uk family first. meat-eating Bob and shirley who don't mind the odd battery-farmed egg.
Phase 2 was to reduce/remove the meat in order to also remove the battery eggs.
The polls on old style and on DT have revealed FR eggs as more of a priority than meat though, and with over 350 participants (some have posted but not clicked, so I have included those views too) with over half of the people saying FR eggs are a non-negotiable.
I am still a bit unsure where fresh milk comes into this and our poll constructing tools are a bit limited on here, and people will probably not join in with a new poll now if they've already answered one.
So as you've all seen, I've been working on egg-free recipes at the same time.
By pushing 2 meal planners forward simultaneously I'm obviously diluting the time energy I/we have for the first planner.
I'd appreciate advice about the order to tackle this in.
On powdered vs. fresh milk, I wonder whether it's worth taking into account what it goes into? Although some people have said they would rather have fresh milk than other things, they are probably thinking of it as an all or nothing thing. Taste wise, when I have used powdered milk in the past I found it was noticable when used in tea and on cold cereal. I've never used it on hot cereal but in hot chocolate and cheese sauces I didn't notice significant deterioration in taste. It might be that those people who want fresh milk would be satisfied as long as they had fresh milk for tea/cereal and wouldn't mind if they had powdered in the cooking?Any question, comment or opinion is not intended to be criticism of anyone else.2 Samuel 12:23 Romans 8:28 Psalm 30:5

Finally: I really struggle if to make the rope attractive enough, we have to reduce its effectivity proportionally. For me adding to the budget represents this. I feel that every £5 we add to the budget is a weakening of our rope's ability to pull shirley out of her hole. I want to offer her a strong sturdy rope. I struggle to offer her a flimsy bit of string just cos she doesn't like the way the rope hangs in her hole!
In other words, it's what Amy D says in the Tightwad Gazette - following "safe", halfway advice will never get you more than halfway there (or words to that effect).
I totally "get" what you are saying, Weezl, and am totally behind you in this and will help in any way I can.
That does not, however, mean that I will ever follow the plan to the letter. Like so many here have already said, most people will take the plan as the starting point and then build on it to suit themselves - in effect, they will take your lesson and learn how to fish. It may be slow, it may never be more than halfway - but the point is that, should they choose to get all the way out of the whole, and go fishing on a more or less permanent basis - you are showing them that this is possible. That's where, to me, your plan is priceless.
And I have to tell you that, the higher you climb, the more attractive the rope looks - especially as you realise how sturdy it really is. Eventually, Shirl or her equivalent might just get tired of hanging around and press on to climb all the way out. And you never know - once out, she might decide to keep climbing, and in a few years time, she'll be teaching you how to live healthily on 25p a day
Incidentally, I have developed this belief that the mere existence of the rope is sufficient to help even if you do not choose to climb up it using my very own self as a case studyI was always fairly frugal, I think, and never a spendthrift, and when the time came when I felt that further purse-string tightening would be beneficial, I really struggled to find any helpful advice, as I was already doing everything that this advice offered. It wasn't until I saw Weezl living on 50p a day that I finally figured out how to reduce my spending even further, even though I never went as impressively low as that. Quite simply, someone doing it for 50p a day opens up so many more possibilities than someone doing it for £1, even if one's intention is never to go any lower than £2.50. Not sure why that is, really, but I'll give it some thought.....

Am now reading this thread with interest
....not managed all 51 pages yet though!
We are on a tight budget but we do spend on food- hard up here with less shops, lots of nice local meat etc, and we have few other treats. Aim to incorporate some of the ideas and see how it goes!
Wish me well and I wish you all well too.

bought some powdered milk this week - verdict?
used it to make the lemon and sultana pancakes - no problem there. used it in my morning coffee - I didn't enjoy it at all - but if I had no choice but to use powdered milk then I would probably get used to it in time. If it was a toss up between meat a few times a week and fresh milk - I would use powdered
haven't been brave enough to try it in DH's tea yet - he's quite particular about his tea, and this week I bought bags instead of loose tea, so the powdered milk might be grounds for divorce!weaving through the chaos...0 -

during one of my many attempts to lose weight, I decided that I could save a few calories by not having milk in tea or coffee. It took a little while to change my taste buds, but after not very long, I found I didn't like either any more with any milk at all.
So another option for B&S perhaps0 -
Re milk in coffee- is UHT milk not a lot cheaper that ordinary stuff (although perhaps not cheaper than powdered ? Perhaps a medium for someone who cannot do powdered stuff ? Personally I always have coffee black as hate milk as a drink (use it in cooking if I have to lol!).Ermutigung wirkt immer besser als Verurteilung.

Re the rope
Some time ago I was attending a seminar on a business area I was doing at the time and hoping to pick up a few tips.
One of the newbies there asked why the lecturer could afford to, in effect, teach the opposition how to compete with him. His answer was that he knew for certain that even giving people a step by step how to do it guide and giving everyone in the room unlimited access to himself on the phone for the next 3 months, only 2-5% of people would ever do anything at all about it.
My point is that any change is extremely challenging for most people, even good change. Many, many people now believe the disasterous damage to their health and wallet that is smoking, but still can't get the momentum to give up. And that is not complicated (hard, but not complicated), you just stop.
So it sort of doesn't matter what we see as the benefits to B&S, our task is to present it in a way that will convince a goodly proportion of B&S's to actually do it, or start along the path of doing it. People have this ghastly habit of not listening to good advice and insisting on doing their own thing! Ever watched those debt advice programs where people are doing THE most ridiculous things and are very resistant to the presenters suggestions?
I am now wondering what extremes Weezl might be thinking of to get people to do what's good for them - you WILL get out of debt - ooer :rotfl:
We are a highly motivated lot on OS and very up for saving in any way we can apply. However, we are not the norm and I think we need to bear that in mind, what motivates us won't necessarily motivate B&S0 -
I am going to make cauliflower cheese soon but can only find the recipe on page 2. Is that the final version for now? If it is I am going to use powdered milk:)
Good luck Orkney, you have some of the same problems as me ie not easily accessible to the big supermarkets. You just have to do what you can.business mortgage £0))''(+ Barclay's business kitchen loan £0=Total paid off was £96105 PPI claimed and received £13527

Provisional ingredients and costings for the most frugalised Cauliflower cheese I can do:D
- 1 bag cauliflower 79p
- 65 ml veg oil 4.875
- 110g plain flour 3.1
- 8 tsp mustard powder 12p
- Large pinch salt
- 1 pint water
- 80g cheddar cheese or similar, grated, 49.8
Yes, lets try this one but with powdered milk instead of the water
Can you serve it with 250g potato wedges per person, plus 2 other veg weighing 80g each?
(but as your men are hungry and outdoorsy, maybe have a bit to spare ie extra wedges as seconds in case of mutiny!)
I really appreciate this PB
