If it was me I would work on the original plan first. Get this sorted and then tackle the other options. My reasons for this are that, as many people have said, they would like to use your original plan and adapt it to their needs. So, for example, those requiring free-range eggs could in the short term purchase them as an 'extra cost' but still save money overall by using this basic plan. This would then give you the breathing space to formulate the other options available which they could then change to.
Hope this helps.
By the way, for stuffing I use a version of this recipe (minus the lemon and sausages, bacon and parsley) I use dried sage and I don't bother to pre-cook the onions either - it is how my grandma used to make it. http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/72613/lemon-and-herb-stuffing

Looking on Mysupermarket, the SP chicken weighs 1kg. That's for fresh chicken, I can't see a frozen one. Is that right?
If so that's less then the weight you quoted weezl but it means that my 1.5kg chicken for 6 would indeed work....What do you think???
hmmmmmmn! the photo on the my supermarket website says 1.412 kg, but mysupermarket say approx 1 kg. Lets go with your one being a fine comparator Frankie

Weezl, PERSONALLY I think people aren't just "getting" the egg issue, so I'd be inclined to ignore the poll results.
(FWIW, my DH who IS British, voted for powdered milk in favor of some meat)
I agree Aless. I also don't think that people have grasped that by voting no battery eggs, they are voting for no eggs at all! And therefore a lot of the baking/cakes/quiche type meals will have to be pretty novel
Sorry to be a bit stupid about your last sentence, but did you mean DH would accept powdered milk in tea if it meant he could have a meaty diet?
I've read your sentence over a few times and my brain won't fathom it!

good linkie! and we have those ingredients (apart from the sausage and bacon, and the herbs are dried, but I think the principle is there
YAY!
Frankie how do you feel about trying that out with sunday's chook?;):)

FWIW, I can rarely find a chicken under £2 in ASDA unless you just get extremely lucky. They usually run around £2.30-2.50 and up...
Weezl, PERSONALLY I think people aren't just "getting" the egg issue, so I'd be inclined to ignore the poll results. Like you've posted in the past, when faced with hummus sandwiches & porridge every single day, I'll bet that 90% of the FR-only voters would buy battery eggs in order to have a more "normal" diet. While I hate hate hate battery eggs myself (I used to work for DEFRA...), I can totally understand the very valid point of something's got to give - either the house gets reposessed or some chickens have a bad time!
Okay, a bit drastic, but you see the point. ALSO, I really think the whole FR egg debate is totally pointless given battery will be illegal in 2 years' time. One can hope that the resulting minor backlash will reduce the price of FR eggs to a manageable level for B&S (well, I'm ambivalent about the moral aspects of that, but that's a debate for another day). If you want your plans & recipes to be long-lasting, ignore the eggs!!
So my vote is for the some-meat-with-battery-eggs-as-"normal"-as-possible-with-powdered-milk menu.
(FWIW, my DH who IS British, voted for powdered milk in favor of some meat)
:T I completely agree on the egg front.
Weezl, you are doing great and I think if push comes to shove things like smoking and alcohol are luxuries and take a back seat. I type as a 20 year exsmoker and for many years we literally couldn't afford even a cheap cider unless it was a real real treat. That is fine. I think stick to the budget and your original aims. People can always adapt as they feel fit or is appropriate.Put the kettle on.0 -
weezl Ok, I can do that. just need to pick up some lemons...are they cheap enough to fit in with the budget or should I leave them out and just use everything else (except the sausage and bacon)?
Also can you remind me again what meat i need to leave for the pie? Is it just the legs and wings?0 -
I've put some potatoes on to boil for some veggie burgers.
I'm working on 250g per person.
I'll let you know how it works out and take a couple of pics.0 -

general consensus on old-style about rubber chicken was to allow half the bird for the roast (ie all the breast meat OR all the dark meat) and keep the rest for the pie. If you go for serving the breast meat as the roast, then I'd be inclined to slice it into 3-4 mm slices crossways towards the bone, so that when served with the slices fanned out and covered in gravy, it will look like more meat than when in a bigger 'Chunk' IYSWIM? But I'm happy to leave it in your capable hands
I'm debating the inclusion of a bag of fresh lemons ATM.... major downside, they show a photo on the website which has 6-7 in the net and DH bought one that had 3 small ones. This worked out as dearer than the asda own brand lemons which are larger. Hope this doesn't happen to shirley!
But yes, let's go with the lemon for now

sorry if my sentence was unclear, weezl. He has said he would drink powdered milk if it meant he could have some meat (as opposed to fresh milk and no meat) - he's not a huge tea drinker but loves milk on cereal, porridge, out of a glass, etc.

weezl Thanks for the chicken info. I'll be doing it on Sunday so will take pics and let you know how it goes.
I've made my veggie burger mix:
1kg potatoes
100g diced onion
100g grated carrot
1 tin value baked beans
oil for frying
Boiled potatoes in skins, drained and mash lightly. Fried onions in oil until slightly translucent ( hoping this will still keep some crunch), then added grated carrot. Fried for another minute or so then mixed into potatoes. Added tin of baked beans.
at the moment the mixture looks a little wet so I've put it in the fridge. I'll give it a couple of hours and then make into burgers.
My DH is the bread maker so I shall be using reduced bunsto serve.
Do you think these could be frozen? I was thinking that perhaps that would help Shirley out a little?0
