good point avocet - my girls do have either a cooked pudding or a cake/biscuit after our evening meal everyday but other snacks are savoury/fruit/yoghurt. but...the portions of the cakes on the planner are small in my opinion.

They are small, but there's 3 of them! I know we're keeping track of nutrition, but I confess I do wonder about sugar levels (between the copious amounts of raisins & white sugar in lots of dishes).

I have to say I agree with other posters - I preferred the meal planner before calcium gate when it contained some meat dinners, some fish & some veggie. I know we want "healthy" but to me "healthy" =! "perfect" - does anyone ever have a perfect diet?! I feel like if Shirley can get Bob even on board, after a week the whole family would rebel and the project would be lost.

The simple fact is you can't force people to be practically vegetarian* (which is what THEY will see the menu as) when they don't want to be. Most stubborn men would probably think, "sod the calcium, I want a least some meat in my dinners!". I second the idea of wacking a poll in DFW/Arms, as OS tends to attract a quite different type of person than other parts of MSE. Sure we OS people are hopping on board immediately, but you're writing this plan with distinctly non-OS-minded people in mind - you need something that GRABS them, not something where everyone immediately goes "urgh!"at the menu. You have to make people want to do the project, IYSWIM.

Sorry not try to sound down-trodden, I just feel like we need to go back to about a week ago when there was pork leg, chickens & mince on the shopping list :o.

    * I, of course, have nothing against vegetarians, but you have to admit that if it's a situation someone is "forced" into, they're naturally going to rebel.

personally, I have considered them far too often for my own good :D

well done Avocet, I found reading that list exhausting let alone calculating it!

morag's comments were very interesting...I think a poll in DFW and the Arms would provide some interesting research and maybe some helpful contributors too.

    .

A poll in DFW might be a possibility - but please please NOT one in the Arms. This thread has stayed 99% friendly/co-operative to date - and I dont think it would be a good idea to go asking in a sub-Forum where a lot of people go for "verbal punch-ups"....... (not saying all of them I hurry to add.....but there are some....).

I know you wanted to bring this in on £100, it's a nice looking number, but I would like to echo what taka says, maybe it's just not possible to feed 4 people who like to eat meat for £100 anymore? Even with the heavily subsidised food in the Uk, prices have jumped up in the last 12 months or so. The previous plans had little bits of tasty meat, enough for most families to not notice or feel to much difference I thought. The current plan has only bacon and pilchards, I think even I would struggle with that.

I love the project, I love the idea of the cheapest possible grocery bill for those that need it, but I am wondering now if the cheapest possible for the meat eaters is over £100 and only the veggie families can make it under £100. It's all more choices for families that are chain smoking on the stress. We can continue to eat meat or we can go veggie and pay another £10 a month off our debts.

Sorry to rain on various parades.

Well....howzabout a slightly different way of framing this - still with a nice "number". Howzabout changing it from "£100 for a family of 4 for a month" to "£30 per person per month"?

As £30 is pretty much what the average person expects to spend on food per WEEK - then to be told of a plan where they could spend £30 per person per MONTH would still sound absolutely incredibly helpful to them.
This would bring us to £130-£135 range for the family of 4 per month and we could go a long ways with that extra £30-£35 to play with.

Gosh, I hope I haven't opened a can of worms...I'm really sorry if my comments have made extra stress/work for you all!!

LesleyMy 16yr old DD is 6ft too and a size 8 and eats no where near what your DD ate...I can see why people need the snacks...would toast work out cheaper than the cakes, seeing as pieces of fruit aren't really an option?

thanks avocet - I'd got it into my head that there were 2 snacks a day (therefore equalling our 1 greedy portion)

ceridwen - good point about the Arms, hadn't thought about it that way as it's not a board I ever visit - but we don't want to encourage any trolls.
    weaving through the chaos...
  • 75ml of dbl cream, milk, creme fraiche or for the brave Evaporated Milk
2oz Gran Padarno or Parmesan grated
2 whole eggs and one egg yolk
    Pepper

    Mix the ingredients above together.

Fry off about 150g of pancetta, bacon bits, chopped bacon or chopped left over ham joint in a pan until nicely browned. Turn off the pan.

Cook a shed load of pasta depending on how much your family eats. The amount of sauce will easily cover three quarters of a packet of spaghetti.

When the pasta is nearly cooked turn the heat back on under the bacon and throw in 2 chopped cloves of garlic or a squidge of garlic paste.

Drain the cooked pasta and return to the pan but do not return to the heat. Working very quickly add the bacon and garlic to the pan and stir. Then tip in the cheese and egg mixture. Stir like mad. The heat from the pan and the pasta and bacon will just cook the egg mixture but make sure you use fresh eggs and don't serve to pregnant Weezl's just in case.

Been thinking whilst concocting a leftovers dish for dinner tonight..fingers crossed for my Indian-style concoction of grated carrots/chickpeas/onion/tomatoes/garam masala and I chucked some breadcrumbs and sunflower seeds on top...Gawd only knows how it will turn out.....time will tell...

    But...anyways...back to the point.

Our Weezl - you know just how highly I rate you by now:). So take it as coming from that standpoint my lass:) - and t'thing is you are very much an extremely hard worker and a perfectionist. I have perfectionists for parents - so I do understand this. Lets hear it for the perfectionists of the world:T

I DO know by now that not a lot of other people are half as "perfectionist"....so, whilst thoroughly applauding such laudible aims as this £100 per month for our "family" - then that bit of upping the figure I suggested - or some other way of upping the figure JUST that little bit really does seem like a good idea to me. Believe me - its just a little bit of "adaptation" to allow for the fact that 98% of us just arent in your league of determination/willpower/resourcefulness/etc.

A leetle bit of "elbow room" makes for a heck of a difference sometimes.

Realistically - I have to say that Bob and Shirley will want that bit more meat than I would personally want them to want - BUT ITRW they will do. Also - I have to say that I doubt very much that anyone (no matter how hard their backs are against the wall) will use powdered milk in their tea (remembers that from decades ago....and sticks fingers down throat gesture...).

Weezl - my lass - you are SO determined, SO committed, SO ..well all sortsa good qualities that it may be a bit difficult (and I DO understand - oh boy...do I understand:cool:) - but one hell of a lot of people dont have your huge level of dedication/commitment/etc.

You ARE quite exceptional in your hard work/resolve/determination...(aside to other posters: "She WILL believe us all one day...honest guys/gals...if we keep telling her often enough":)) - and Bob & Shirley and 98% of the human race simply isnt in your league in that respect. BUT....the big BUT....we are doing our best to emulate you...so with justa little bit of "adjustment" of the amount of money allowed in this monthly Budget...then I think we will be there/done and dusted/Project ready to go "out there" and we can all sit back/break out the celebratory alcohol..or cakes....and have a b****y good celebration..before getting onto Phase II work.
  • 1 oz butter or spread
    1 oz flour
about a pint of hot stock
2-3oz of whatever hard cheese you have, grated. If using parmesan or gran padano less cheese is needed.
1 heaped tsp of grey mustard or mustard powder for Shirl.

Make a roux with the butter and flour. Add the hot stock in about 4 goes. Between each addition of stock stir the mixture until all the liquid incorporates into the flour and butter. (If you lift the pan off the heat and beat hard with a wooden spoon after the liquid is incorporated your sauce will be beautifully glossy). By the time all the liquid is added you should have a sauce which will coat the back of a spoon. If not add more water or stock. Stir in the mustard and most of the cheese. Leave a spoonful of cheese for the top.

Fry some bacon bits, chopped bacon or ham from ham joint. Add cooked bacon to the sauce and season sauce with pepper and salt.

Stir sauce into shed load of cooked pasta (I use most of a 500g bag but I am a piggy).

Put saucy pasta in baking dish. Top with remaining cheese. Shove in oven at 180 until there are nice brown crunchy bits on the top.

    Stuff face. :)

If Shirl has them available she could add mushrooms or some peas or diced cooked potato to the dish. To enrich for calcium purposes she could add a splash of milk or some milk powder to the sauce.

This is just as nice without the bacon even my fuss-a*se dp enjoys it.

  • I'm wondering if we can manage a £120 a month type thing then maybe it can eventually be tweaked downwards and eventually get it to our ideal. At the moment it must be so hard to come up with something and find it's not going to work. Even if we all gave it up as a bad job now (which I doubt will happen) I and many other have learned so much and I'm really grateful even in these early stages :)

  • phew got to the end!! Congratulations twinkle!!! Well done you ...weezl shame you said joke as I was up for it frugal wedding plan...! :D
Re discussions on budget I'll always go for upping it a bit cos I'm the rebellious type who needs a bit of leg/wriggle room and some wine. Could we not have more money and room for juggling - I for one sometimes eat cereal for my tea and please weezl NO to powdered milk - think it would be a step too far and be off putting..you could say if you have dried you could save xxx ammt so give people the info but ack that most wont want to!
Am also with Ceridwen re not posting in the arms...my own exeriences there havent been great. Also I think it best to wait for DFW (as one myself) until the plan is pretty much there and has been tested realistically. Just my two penneth...
