there is one week day which involves soup at lunch, you're right, it's been playing a bit on my mind too. But I will probably see how we go with the colours before moving it... It is duly noted though! Hmmmmn wondering if you thought the bhajees and falafels aren't lunch box friendly... Was that cos of the chutney?

Sorry Weezl, wasn't taking much notice of the days! and Saturday is a working day too here for DH and DS. I think soup would be ok in a flask, if they could be trusted not to break it (DS and DH probably could not).

Also did a Weetabix Cake, adding some oil this time, and reducing the sugar.
    2 Weetabix- 8p
    125g Sugar- 5.26p, was 190g
    190g Sultanas- 25p
    250g Self-Raising Flour - 7p
    155ml Milk – 4.52p was 240ml
    125ml oil 11.62p, wasn't included in recipe
cost 61.4p, original recipe cost 55p. Don't know how many slices I could get from this as OH has been attacking it. He really likes this version, so I will go with this one

Lesley can you confirm how long you cooked this for asked earlier but its not been confirmed dying to try it seems a long time to cook for the amount used.

yes, I thought so too, esp as my oven is a fan one and I have to reduce both temp and time for those given for non-fan ovens

I set the timer for the hour and checked after 30 mins when it was still white, after 40 mins, when it could do with a little more, and took it out after another 5 mins, so 45 mins

Avocet, with 2 batches of carrot cake made and the zest of 3 oranges used for the garibaldis, how much of the bag of oranges do we have left, inclusive of the peel? I'm wondering about asking for a test of a possible HM marmalade
So far, oranges haven't been used for anything in the menu plan apart from the carrot cake and still-under-discussion biscuits. This means that you have, potentially:
    • the zestless, juiced shells of 2 oranges (carrot cake) - can be frozen till needed
    • 3 oranges minus their zest (biscuits)
    • 7 completely untouched oranges.

    Mumtoomany.

If I was doing this, I would def use soup almost every day as lunch as I find it so sustaining, with a thinly sliced bread and cheese sandwich as well if I was extra hungry. I would use a flask that I bought specially for soup. It holds 500ml, is wide mouthed and is a stainless steel interior, so not easily breakable

Got it from Robert Dyas I think, but they are widely available

For me, heating some soup for a flask and making a sandwich would not be a faf, but it might for people not used to prepping food

We all have our own preferences!

It constantly shocks me how little the majority of people cook from scratch, or even do anything at all that I would consider cooking.

My circle of friends all cook, and of course, most people on OS do, but that is not the norm

Must go off to do a couple of errands, this thread takes some keeping up with! Will do those recipecal things for yoo Weezl, prob today

    Back later xx
  • Made the carrot cake a couple of days ago in two 8" round cake tins - cut each into 8 pie shaped pieces (could have cut smaller really), ate some while still warm (very yum!) and put rest in tupperware container. Just had some more now and it is still delicious, moist and yummy!

ooooh I feel a challenge coming on!

    Marmalade challenge:

please try to combine the above, plus water and sugar into a marmalade.

the zestless, juiced shells of 2 oranges sounds weird to use I know, but I'm thinking that the extra bitterness of the pith will balance out the fact that these are sweet eating oranges and not the seville kind usually used in marmalade.

I appreciate this is a big ask as you may waste about £1 plus your time if it's inedible, so please only do it if you would genuinely like to, I don't want anyone being too sacrificial about this, just do it if you'd have fun mucking about in your kitchen with it! Due to the extra zestless pith, I recommend a thin cut rather than thick cut, but I wait to be corrected :)
