Results of falafel test # 1

Mr Weezl - good mouthfeel, substantial, a good spice balance, perhaps a touch more salt, almost like a veggie burger (that's a good thing!)

Needs chutney or a sauce/mayo, like we had it with, or would be quite dry because of the chick pea texture.

Enough for a satisfying lunch :)

Weezl- tasty, like the mayo-ness a lot with it, but probably heavier than my average lunch so I would probably have an open sandwich, ie 1 slice bread, chutney and a falafel on top.

like the onionyness very much, and thought there could be a touch more chilli :)

We served it with 2 slices of HM bread and chutney and lemon mayo :)

ISOM had it too, but she will report back herself...

  • Yummy falafel...thought initially it was fennel but surmised it was onion taste.
Didnt think you needed the lemon mayo but chutney essential, although thats personal choice! Only downside is the wind...Ferg and I had a merry old burp tog!!
Wasnt 100% sure but tasted nice that I thought it would and would make it myself but withthout lemon mayo...

ha ha - the things we do!

The Split Pea soup is 150g split peas, a chopped onion and a stock cube simmered for about half an hour or until soft in 2.5 pints water. Blitz until smooth and adjust seasoning. Tastes surprisingly good considering how little is actually in it.

HM chicken stock if you have it improves it of course, but it doesn't really need it. Can't remember if it does 4 or 6 servings, the 2.5 pints suggest maybe its 6

This is a lovely, easy recipe:T I should think that lentils would be just as nice if no split peas.
  • Further adventures in fritter land...

Had the sweetcorn fritters again for dinner, added garlic and spices...with left over green beans..mmmm

I served with HM soup- butternut squash and red pepper...very moreish in deed.

Well have just decluttered a piece along with a cuppa,

    verdict 8/10

Cake was nice & moist, not too sweet, might have to consider the icing next time - I do love this part on a normal carrot cake.

Will fill in survey & do a costings later

My soups most of thetime are just 2 sainburys basic veg cubes into one and half litres of water with any veg that I have laying around that needs using up. I even have a 22year old at work that brings me her out of date veg? I told her when I was her age veg didn't do out of date and in my house it still doesn't, boil up for 20mins and blitz with my hand blender. In return she has some soup with me at work and loves it. I keep telling her how to make it but she doesn't, I have got her making stews though and she and her boyfriend love them.

Soup and a little bread is the cheapest lunch ever..... at home .......and at work (if you can use a microwave or have a flask)
Why pay full price when you may get it YS ;)

    Falafel method and costings:

    • 260g dried chickpeas , soaked and cooked as per packet instructions (this will be the fiddly bit for Shirley!) 33.02p
    • 2 tsp garlic paste 4p
    • 2 tsp garam masala 2p
    • 1tsp chilli powder 2p
    • 4 desertspoons plain flour 4p
    • 2 tbsp sunflower oil 8p
    • 2 med/large onion (200g) , roughly chopped 8p

    1. Tip chickpeas into a food processor along with the onion, garlic, spices, flour and a little salt. Blend until fairly smooth, then shape into 16 patties with your hands.
    2. Heat the oil in a non-stick frying pan, add the burgers, then quickly fry for 3 mins on each side until lightly golden. Serve with HM bread and lemon mayonnaise or purple spicey chutney.
