Regarding men and meat. My DH has always said he goes to bed hungry if he doesn't have meat in his belly. Our finances are at rock bottom and we are trying to feed 4 (3 men) adults, plus usually 3 extras at weekends on £200 per month. Most of the time I have been able to manage but this month we are really struggling financiallyso I have been feeding them all veggie meals at least three times a wekk and have not had a single complaint.

poohbear59, I'm ever so greatful you posted! It feels like yours is the exact kind of situation I was hoping we could all come up with some useful suggestions for, although you are already doing all the good stuff :D. Grand to have you here. Seems like yours and DH's perspective will be very useful going forward.

Can I ask a little more? Would DH ever give up meat if things were really tight, or do you feel that twice a week is the minimum? If it could only be either something with a meaty flavour but hardly any meat daily (example: a HM pizza with a slice of smokey bacon snipped onto the top of it along with veg) vs a more substantial amount of meat (100g belly pork + stuffing + vegetables) twice a week, which would he be best able to cope with for the long term? Many thanks if you are willing to give this feedback! xxx

I haven't managed to read everyone's response but I wanted to make a comment about free range eggs. so forgive me if I'm repeating what others have said.

I've bought FR eggs for years and now we are blessed enough to have room for chickens in the back garden. I voted for FR eggs in Weezl's poll...

however...I am imagining the kind of family we're aiming at has been eating a lot of processed foods, ready meals, take aways. if these products contain eggs they most likely will be battery farmed . so even if the family thinks they only eat FR they've probably eaten more battery eggs than they realise so they're not really compromising their principles, just becoming more aware of what they eat.

as we keep reminding ourselves - this is a subsistence plan which will give families a framework that they can adapt and work within.

please don't give up weezl - although maybe get some more sleep now and again, I don't know how you fit it all in!

I did wonder whether our mythical family has never bought a ready made cake/ cake bar/ quiche/mayonnaise/ egg sarnie tuna mayo baguette whilst out and about etc etc as all of these things will have contained non-FR egg. It does seem a shame to let the challenge fall down simply because we're basically swapping a shop bought cake bar (containing hidden non-FR eggs) for home made carrot cake (also containing non FR egg. Seems to me to miss something I feel. :)

    Hi misskool...
I am the process of setting up a spread sheet for the comments / feedback for specific recipes...
Although this is proving to be a little more problematic than I had first thought, as everyone has their own variation of a particualar recipe, therefore the findings/comments will always be different.
I am not sure what the correct way ahead is, to collate such variations *confused*

I think you might be right, in that the way ahead, would be a blog, for testers to add there own individual comments (*kicks self as didn't think of that :o)
At least that way, it is the individuals OWN comments on a specific recipe, and not the thoughts of the persons collating the inforamation....

Weezl, I will wait before doing any more work on the info provided so far, to see what you think :)

Potty, thanks for all your hard work so far :A I feel you're probably in the best position to make that call, having tried to collate the info, is it a bit of a monster tricky task filtering out all the[STRIKE] idle banter[/STRIKE] essential exchange of ideas? Would you value a seperate place?

The tricky thing is if we do blog and list the recipes they aren't ours to reproduce now in that way I think- MSE owns them, so they need to live here. In that way it's hard to seperate out the feedback from that.... IYSWIM?

Question which is something I may of missed. Do the family shop around?? for example. Farmfoods do 2 x 2litre whole milk for £1.50. Iceland does 6 free range large eggs for £1.

:T:T:TI'd like our resource to suggest that they do, but as people are saying lets take it gently on Bob and Shirley, I was thinking maybe month one is all from one supermarket, and then in month 2 she can get her head round going to a few other places as well? I'm thinking shirley may never have had to cook so much from scratch before, so she might feel really deflated at the same time if she also has to go to loads of shops....

How does that seem to folk? Sensible?

  • Just a thought to add into the pot as it were.

The Asda's and Tesco in our locale- run free buses. Is it the same elsewhere?

Plus we have markets, farm shops, Aldi, Netto, Morrisons, Farm foods..cheap shops like B&M bargains, Home bargains as well.

The mythical family may well have a bit of a choice.

Apologies if it has been said before. Bob :)

It does. I do have some concerns over the perceive skills required for some recipes. Pastry for example. Its easy but must be daunting.

My BIL has money issues and I fed him for a month on £40 from asda but it was very very boring 2 types of soups, lasagne/bolognese/chilli made with 800g steak mince in all bulked with veg and lentils, chicken curry using thigh meat, ham and tomato quiche. He is a single guy and he helped me cook and portion it all in my house and OMG you should of seen his face when he realised he would have to actually do something as simple as peel a potato. He had been a fully paid up member of the take away or ready meal club.

    results for sweetcorn fritters

    100g plain flour 2.9p
    1 egg 9.9p
    75ml whole milk 4.12p
    75ml water 0p
    pinch salt and pepper 1p?
    half onion diced 3.5p
    frozen sweetcorn 180g 17.1p
    oil 25ml 2.32
    40.84p

    made 8 fritters of approx 9cm x 9cm so 5.1p each :j
I omitted the baking powder, sugar , forgot the smoked paprika :o only used 1 egg ( but added 75mls water instead)
I measured out 100mls of veg oil but actually only used 25ml and substituted spring onions (cos I didnt have any) for half a sp onion

we have just had them and the verdict? delish the kids LOVED them they did add a blob of ketchup as I didnt make the chutney and TBH I think it does need something to give it a kick ( maybe the paprika may have done this or certainly the chutney)

we had 2 each and they are very filling

so scores 9/10 ( would be 10/10 if i had made the chutney or remembered the paprika ;))

I hope you don't mind me joining in.
I've been reading this thread with great interest...

I would love more info on how you came up with the £100 figure.
We are a family of 6 and I try to work on £10 per person per week for all groceries. I have a husband who likes meat with every meal, though he can cope with veggie lasagne!
I use cooking bacon, usually half a pack, which I count as a meat meal. I'm trying to have 1 or sometimes 2 veggie meals a week. When it's just the children and I, it usually works out at alternate days.

With pork belly, I chop up the pork belly, usually about 1 slice each and roast it with onions, mushrooms and other veg and then serve with mash, peas and gravy.

Anyway, just a few thoughts, I hope you don't mind.
  • Weezl not sure about the sausage thing really but have worked out roughly 8 sausages per lb but these are biggish ones and will have a large meat content but not really done any weighing of individual sausages or meat as everything is done in bulk

I did have a thought about your burgers though some sausagemakers use stuffing mix as a flavouring so how about mixing a pack of stuffing (dry mix)with some pork mince and some cooked apple ? i would say half pack stuffing to 500g minced pork you can always add a bit of water if its too dry after mixing

Will bear questions in mind next time i make a batch of sausages and work out meat content !

Better go hubbys run me a bath

sistercas that's fantastic! well done you, you must be so pleased:D

Can I ask a few more questions? Hope so :):

    • Did your family feel as full as they usually do after dinner?
    • Was it everyone's main meal of the day, or had some had a big dinner at luch time?
    • How often do the family eat meat and did anyone mind it not being there?

    Thanks loads xxx
