Guaranteeing a cheque, info appreciated.

I have a £100 cheque guarantee card with the Halifax bank(It has the little Shakespeare hologram on the back) and because I was unsure how to guarantee it I just called my bank to ask what I write on the cheque to guarantee it (or what the recipient writes)
The Halifax member of staff said I don't have to write anything at all on the cheque, I just have to show the individual that I have a cheque guarantee card and the cheque will automatically be guaranteed and paid.
Does that sound right to you guys? Because I have been getting conflicting advice that the number should be written on the back of the cheque by the persn recieving the cheque and now I am totally confused.
I need to write a £100 guaranteed cheque today before 10AM so any help from people would be appreciated.

the receipient has to write out the details on the back of your cheque.0

The person you are giving the cheque too must watch you sign the cheque in front of them and then THEY MUST write on the back of it the long card number across the middle.
You cannot guarantee a cheque yourself and you cannot guarantee one to someone who has not watched you sign the cheque, as they must compare the signature on the cheque with the signature on the card and made sure the sort-code matches the card and the cheque if the card has a sort code on it. So for example you cannot guarantee a cheque you are sending through the post.0 -
but how does the bank know that the recipient is the one who wrote the number? Do they have to sign/write their name next to it or something? If I do not follow the correct procedure then the cheque will not be guaranteed so I must get it right0

If you have sufficient funds in your bank account to honour the cheque then what is the problem? Its up to the recipient to prove that they saw the guarantee card and watched you sign the cheque.Debt free since 18/11/2011

It's not YOU who has to follow the correct procedure, it's the recipient. You don't have to do anything other than hand the cheque and card over.
Most of the time it would be possible to prove from the handwriting if there's a dispute as to who wrote it.0 -

That seems to be the crux of the matter: it appears the OP has not enough funds in his/her account and wants to force
the bank to accept a cheque, which they would normally bounce.
Not only will there be a charge for ‘card abuse’, the bank might well ask for the return of cheque card and book.0
