Not included in the 'government's' figures are those who are no longer able to claim JSA because they have used up their allowance, or people who are studying for want of a job (i.e. as a default option). There are also many people who are getting work from time to time, or who work part-time when they can because they cannot get full-time employment.

We have one bright person in the office who has been working there, unpaid, for the last six months (because the company is so badly off). She has been intensively trying to get a job, but without success. There are many people in this position, both college leavers and older people who were made redundant with only statutory payments, who really need to continue to work to support themselves.
  • Its far better in places like Japan, where if you dont work you dont eat. And you have to take out some private insurance for if you are ill or when you retire.

Its so crazy in the UK when a couple I know in there 60's have nearly always been on public funds since they left school. First dole then some kind of sickness ben for decades. I think they only have 1 or 2 years working between them their entire lives. And wait for it, they have bought their 4 bed coucil house years ago no mortgauge left and now drive a Merc. Park where ever they like on some disability or whatever.

I went to school with the kids and they all got free school meals and uniforms, I had cheap !!! sandwiches my mum made because my dad was working.

So is this figure 1 in 5 going to end up like this couple? What future has the UK got????????????????????????????????????

Am I daft in assuming we should only be interested in stats on 2 things :-
    a) how many people are in Full Time employment
    b) how many people are in Part Time employment

Having a long term average of say 1.5m unemployed is of no consolation if the population of working age were to fall by 10% over a period.

OK how many student, retired people and stay at home parents are there.

It's a silly stat as there will always be students, record numbers of people are reaching retirement and people will give up work to bring up children.

What is the point of including them in unemployment figures?

The only one I can see which is not 100% clear is long term sick.

It's a bit harsh old fruit.

While the baldly stated metric isn't meaningful, changes in it are as people will be discouraged by not being able to find work and will give up in the end and rely on the OH to support them or go into education to retrain for something else. I know plenty of ex-bankers that have gone down one or other route.
