Barclaycard Goldfish or initial?

Options
Hi, the Barclaycard pre-application check is giving me a 60% to 70% chance for the Goldfish card and a 80% to 90% for the initial.

I know they do this by searching Callcredit and my actual Equifax credit file is somehow better than Callcredit. However my credit history doesn't go beyond 9 months and for the Goldfish Barclaycard says you need to have a longer credit history.

In addition I applied 4 months ago for the initial (it was 60% to 70% chance then) and was declined I believe because of a CIFAS marker that now I got removed.

I plan to re-apply in two months. Should I go for the Goldfish or just stay with the initial?

Another option would be the Flybe card. Any chance to get it with my short credit history (an Aqua mastercard, two catalogues, bank account and mobile phone)?

Are u sure its not intial or gold card as they are scored closely. I think the goldfish card is not for credit improvement, its for prime customers.

I wouldn't take the gold card with such low percentage. The only reason to get the gold card is u get a better rate so unless you plan to borrow money on it I would have the intial I have one and its very good nearly 6 months in.

    Hi bingy_burge

Yes, 100% sure it is the Goldfish. Anyway, I will apply for the Initial too and try the Goldfish when I have made some more credit history. Now I am almost certain they would decline me for that reason.

    Cheers!

Does it matter how often you run the pre-application check? I.e. A lot of places say 1 application every since months, so does 1 run count as a mini-application? If not could I re-run it every few weeks when my credit providers report that I've paid for that month (as each month, as each one reports, I'm getting better and better history) or do I need to wait for 6 months before running it again?

To clarify, that's running it to see if I get a percentage rather than outright decline, but not actually applying for anything until I hopefully see a high percentage (whether that will happen or not given my circumstances is questionable, that’s why I want to keep using it rather than randomly applying and wasting a full search)

That is what I have been doing. I have run the pre-application check every month and have seen the percentage of chances have improved in the last three months. Initially I had 60% to 70% for initial, then 70% to 80% for initial + 50% to 60% for goldfish and the most recent one 80% to 90% for initial and 60% to 70% for goldfish.

I will apply for initial early March. Hopefully it will be 90% plus then.

Ah great so it doesn't matter how often you run it if you're getting different results? :D I'm off to run it now!

Would it ever say about 80 to 90%?

What can the pre-application check see anyway  It says it's not a full search, so it won't be able to see all the green 0's I've got from paying my cards off? Or can it see them?

It doesn't have an option to select student so you won't get accurate results. Most of Barclaycards doesn't allow students, except the actual student card.

I've just had a chat to Barclaycard people, you may want to bear this in mind. You say they improved in 3 months, is that at the monthly intervals? I asked Barclaycard live chat and they said "I would wait 3 months before retrying" I don't want to apply for a while anyway so probably will just wait the 3 months anyway (need searches from Oct & Nov to get knocked off my Experian & Equifax reports)

Barclays offer the student card with Student account, Barclaycard don't. See my live chat log in the sub-prime thread, they say it's fine to pick unemployed

But you have to remember, I believe you'll be at risk of a CIFAS by selecting Unemployed and Student between different applications. I'm sure NID would clarify this.

hi there - i am looking for advice from anyome who may have heard of a card called first millenium platinum, it claims to be for people with previous credit problems and guarantees acceptance with a £5000 limit but you have to pay £99.95 up front (I remember having to pay £50 to capital one) but i am not sure if this is a scam or not.

But if there isn't a student option so I'm picking the most appropriate? I’d describe myself as an unemployed student… CIFAS Confirmation would be good, but it's not as if I'm selecting full-time. If anything Student is a better option than unemployed (if it were to exist). JSA is ~£60 a week I believe, student income is more than that, so I feel that if anything selecting unemployed if actually giving myself less chance.

I certainly see your point though, but would find it very strange if that was to be the case. I know for car insurance you pick the most appropriate (I think it was on MSE I read it) and depending on what version you pick for your job title you save money and as long as it’s not stupid (i.e. Bar Worker calling themselves a product distributor or something really silly) then it’s fine
