Their "official" press release is here which confirms anyway what has been said by Jambosans excellent first post. It's good to see that Halifax employees can get in there before the official announcements and even have the date for it to happen. Very much appreciated.

This morning I recieved a letter informing me that my local branch of Halifax is closing along with masses of others, this will cause so many people problems including myself.
I have just swapped my bank accounts to reward accounts. I have my mortgage, isa and regular savings account with them and I feel I will have to move banks. The ones closest to me locally are loydes and barclays, there is a hsbc but its a bit too far, which out of those 2 is the best bet? I'm just worried if they will close down too if I move
I am really not happy with this and feel they have known about this for a long time and its closing the beginning of January 2010 apparently there are going to be loads more closingThanx

Just changed my account to the ultimate current. This has transferred my existing account with £500 overdraft. If i can get my overdraft down to £300. Can i (in theory) use the extra £200 to withdraw and re deposit (same day) 5 days in a row to qualift for the £5 reward?0

I'm not sure what you mean? If you withdrew your arranged overdraft above the £300 limit, you will be subject to the £1 daily fee. You could withdraw and deposit the same £200 fives times within the same day, avoid the daily fee, and qualify for the £5 Reward. It would however look a bit suspect. Do you not have wages going in or anything?Anything I post is my opinion, so from time to time I may be wrong. I try to provide answers based in fact, however I don't know everything, so (like all posters on MSE), take what I say with a pinch of salt.0 -
Does anyone know if a potential change from a standard Current Account, well run, to a Reward account is credit checked?
An upgrade to Ultimate Reward is - it says so on the online application. But popping into a branch/phoning for the upgrade to Reward seems different.

I changed my standard current to a Reward back in Feb, and there wasn't a check done on me then!0 -

If you have a full current account to begin with, no further credit checks are required. The Ultimate Reward, Reward, Student and High Interest Current Accounts, are all Standard Current Accounts with added features or specialised current accounts, so an upgrade without credit check is possible.
You would only have to be credit checked when "upgrading" from a Cardcash or Easycash - due to them being basic bank accounts. I use the term "upgrading" lightly, as a new application is required with a resulting separate account being opened.Anything I post is my opinion, so from time to time I may be wrong. My partner and I have spent about 3 hours this afternoon, listing every possible account transaction for the both of us (separate accounts) between now and December 6th and we think, with a little bit of juggling things around and cutting back here and there (I won't be able to go on my works christmas party and we won't be buying each other christmas presents as we'll have to pinch some of our christmas savings to put into our current accounts, we also can not buy anything that isn't food or petrol) we can both be into the black before the new charges come into affect.
We still may look into changing accounts but we are now thinking that maybe the new charges are a blessing as they have forced us to look into our spending again (which had started to get out of hand) and we think it will be a good deterrant (sp?) from going into our overdrafts in the future.
All this said, I am gutted about my Christmas Party.:love:11th March 2010- Got engaged to my amazing fiance, planning our wedding for 20120 -
Well, I have my wages paid into my Halifax Current Account. And make regular use of my £600 overdraft, and have done for around 10 years.
Does anyone know if this is going to be put into place by all banks? If not, then where should I be moving my current account to, to avoid the charges.
As currently I'll end up paying £10-£20 a month for my overdraft0 -
